Developer Insights: Arena with Kris Zierhut

Arena is fun. It can also be quite a challenge. If you’ve ever wanted to get into the technical details about how an Arena draft works you’re in luck, because today we’re pulling back the curtain on what’s happening behind the scenes when you build an Arena deck! An Arena draft is the process of selecting the cards that will be in your Arena deck for a single run of up to 12 wins or 3 losses. You are offered a series of picks, where 3 cards are displayed, and you pick one. After picking 30 cards, your deck is complete. The Arena Buckets The picks are organized around the concept of card “buckets”. A card bucket is a grouping of cards according to specific criteria, including how often they’re chosen during a draft and how often they’re part of a winning deck. The buckets are currently comprised of seven categories of non-Legendary cards and three categories of Legendary cards. The buckets are organized by performance quality, regardless of rarity. For each pick, the game chooses a bucket by weighted-randomness (I’ll explain that a little later), and then pulls three cards from that bucket. You may wonder how cards get organized into buckets. For each card, we know how likely a player is to win a game if that card is in their deck. Cards are organized by their win chance, with similar values grouped into the same bucket. For example, when this system launched in 10.4, all the cards in bucket 1 were cards with a win chance over 53%. There are a small number of cards in bucket 1, with the number of cards in each subsequent bucket increasing as the win chance declines. We also know how likely players are to pick each card. Cards with very high pick rates are “promoted” a bucket, such as Obsidian Statue, which moved from bucket 2 to bucket 1 in 11.0. While cards with very low pick rates are “demoted” a bucket, such as Fire Fly, which moved from bucket 2 to bucket 3 in 11.0. Arena Card Weight Many cards have an increased or decreased chance to appear depending on what type of card (spell, weapon, Class card, etc.) they are. That becomes their weight. For example, a card with a 50% increased chance of appearance would have a weight of 1.5. The chance for each bucket to be picked is proportional to the total weight of all the cards in that bucket. A bucket with a total weight of 200 would have twice the chance of appearing as a bucket with a total weight of 100. We currently use the following modifiers to the weight of cards: A 100% increase for Class cards, a 50% decrease for neutral cards from the Classic and Basic sets, and a 75% increase for spells and weapons. Note that because spells and weapons are also Class cards, these two modifiers multiply, giving those cards a net 250% increase (2.0 * 1.75 = 3.5). There are no bonuses for cards from the most recent set. Additionally, the lowest quality buckets have a reduced chance to be chosen. Micro-Adjustments – The Little Things We like to have each Class close to equal in power level in the Arena. To accomplish that, we have a system that tries to even out the win rates of Classes, using a process called micro-adjustments. The micro-adjustment process is a holistic algorithm that evaluates the win rates of all cards that can be drafted in Arena. We typically apply this process a couple weeks after each expansion, once the initial meta has become clear. The algorithm gives each card a value between 0.7 and 1.3, and that gets multiplied by the card’s other weights. Because this changes the total weight of the buckets, this alters not only the chance for the affected cards to appear, but also the chance for each bucket to be selected. Beyond the micro-adjustments, we also weight the selection of cards by rarity. Common and Basic cards are weighted to appear more often than Rare cards, which are weighted to appear more often than Epic cards. When there are a small number of cards in a bucket, the current system tends to let Rare and Epic cards appear more often than they otherwise would, which isn’t an issue in buckets with a large number of cards. We have improvements for this system planned for update 12.0 to help address that. The Future State of Arena We’re committed to exploring new ideas in Arena, keeping the experience novel and fresh, improving variety, and providing players with greater agency to make more interesting decisions. We’ve noticed that the variety of picks isn’t as diverse as we would like it to be, and we’d love to improve it. To achieve that, we’re making significant changes with Update 11.2: We are adding new buckets that overlap halfway between the existing buckets. For example, a new bucket between buckets 2 and 3 will contain the weakest half of the cards from bucket 2 and the strongest half of the cards from bucket 3. There will be 6 new buckets for non-Legendary cards (for a total of 13), and 2 new buckets for Legendary cards (for a total of 5). Additionally, the strongest cards in the best bucket and the weakest cards in the worst bucket do not appear in the overlapping buckets, effectively reducing their rate of appearance. This change gives more cards a chance to be the best pick in their round, as they will be paired up against a greater variety of other cards. That will result in a more diverse selection of cards appearing in games and getting picked in any given draft. You’ve had your sunglasses out for this season’s Tour Stops. Now ready your flipflops and beach towels, because California and the 2018 Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) Summer Championship are calling! The Blizzard Arena Los Angeles will play host to the HCT 2018’s seasonal championships, starting with the HCT Summer Championship taking place this June 28 through July 1. There will be four days of tournament play on broadcast, with two days—June 30 and July 1—open to a live audience. The final two days of each Seasonal Championship are arguably the most nerve-wracking, featuring elimination and decider matches, as well as the top eight playoffs! If you’ve always wanted to see history in the making, make sure you’re there. The Live Experience What’s a Hearthstone tournament without some good old fashioned Fireside fun? On Saturday, June 30, we’ll be hosting a Fireside Gathering with tons of accompanying activities, including a Tavern Brawl selected specifically for the event. You’ll also get to enjoy eight-player Quickplay tournaments and duke it out with Hearthstone developers in the Duel-A-Dev and Cannons Away activities. As with every Seasonal Championship, we’ll also have some good swag to give away. Participating in and winning the various activities will reward you the “Thrill of Victory” Hearthstone card back pin and other Hearthstone-branded prizes. Audience members also have a chance to be part of raffles, giveaways, and other surprises during the show! There will be food available both in and outside of the studio, so you won’t have to venture out of your way to keep yourself fed and hydrated. HCT Will Spend Its Summer in Sweden–with DreamHack HCT Summer 2018

The Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) is headed back to Jönköping, Sweden, where the first ever DreamHack Hearthstone Grand Prix tournament took place. Eight Hearthstone champions have since been crowned in Jönköping; it’s now time for the ninth with DreamHack HCT Grand Prix Summer 2018. DreamHack HCT Summer is June 16 through 18. 191 Hearthstone competitive points and $15,000 USD are on the line for the tournament’s top players. Tournament Information DreamHack HCT Summer will feature a 256-player Swiss bracket that funnels into the top 16 single elimination playoffs. Matches will be best-of-five in the Last Hero Standing format, with one ban. Deck lists will be open, with the tournament administered through smash.gg. Games will be played on the European Hearthstone server, and all tournament rounds will be streamed. DreamHack is a bring-your-own-device tournament, so your device needs to have an ethernet port (wired internet). DreamHack HCT Summer takes place at the Elmia Exhibition and Convention Centre in Jönköping. Tens of thousands of gamers from all corners of the world visit this event every summer to participate in the myriad tournaments it hosts, and to bask in the atmosphere of one of the most prestigious LAN events in the world. Spots at DreamHack HCT Summer are limited. Aspiring competitors should sign up here as soon as possible. If the tournament is full, registrants will be placed on a waiting list, and DreamHack staff will contact you via email if a spot becomes available. Upcoming Balance Changes - May 2018

In an update that will arrive some time after the HCT Playoffs are complete, we will be making balance changes to the following cards: Naga Sea Witch – Will cost 8 mana. (Up from 5) In update 9.1, we introduced a rule change to increase the consistency of Hearthstone game mechanics. The change affected precisely when Naga Sea Witch’s cost change was applied to cards. This allowed it to be combined with the cost reduction effects on giants, and as a result, it became fairly easy to reduce their mana cost to 0. We think Hearthstone is better all around when interactions are consistent, and we like the fact that a Naga Sea Witch giants deck archetype exists. That said, we also understand that, with its current functionality, this deck can generate early board states that are unreasonable for most classes to deal with. By increasing the cost of Naga Sea Witch to 8 mana, the deck’s concept remains intact, but the combo is delayed until later in a match when more decks are likely to have the tools to handle the arrival of so many giants. Spiteful Summoner – Will cost 7 mana. (Up from 6) After set rotation arrived with the Year of the Raven, Spiteful Summoner became more powerful and consistent when used in decks containing 10 mana cost spells. This is because the pool of 10 mana cost minions in Standard is smaller, so players could more reliably count on getting a powerful minion from Spiteful Summoner’s effect. Even considering the deckbuilding sacrifices that an effective Spiteful Summoner deck requires, we think that increasing the card’s mana cost to 7 is more in line with the powerful outcomes that are possible when it’s used alongside cards like Ultimate Infestation. Dark Pact – Will restore 4 Health. (Down from 8) There are two aspects of Dark Pact that make it powerful. At a cost of 1 mana, it’s easily used alongside cards like Carnivorous Cube, Possessed Lackey, and Spiritsinger Umbra for big combo turns. It also gives Warlocks enough healing potential so that aggressively using Lifetap and playing cards like Kobold Librarian and Hellfire feel less consequential. We left Dark Pact’s cost intact so it can still be used as part of interesting combos, but lessened the healing it provides so Warlocks will need to more carefully consider how much damage they take over the course of a match. Possessed Lackey – Will cost 6 mana. (Up from 5) Some of the card combos involving Possessed Lackey present situations that are too difficult to deal with in the early-to-mid stages of the game. Increasing its mana cost to 6 delays some of those powerful card combos to turns that are easier for opposing decks to overcome. Call to Arms – Will cost 5 mana. (Up from 4) Currently, there are three popular Paladin decks: Even Paladin, Murloc Paladin, and Odd Paladin. Among the three decks, Even Paladin and Murloc Paladin have consistently been the most powerful two archetypes over the first few weeks since the release of The Witchwood. Call to Arms moving to 5 mana restricts it from being used in Even decks and reduces its power somewhat when used in Murloc and other Paladin decks. We expect that players will experiment with Call to Arms at 5 mana in Odd Paladin decks, but we don’t expect this card to have much of an impact. This is because Odd Paladin can’t access 2 mana minions (meaning Call to Arms could only ever summon three 1 mana minions if played in that deck). Note: As a result of this change, we are adjusting the “Greymane’s Alliance” deck recipe. It will now have two copies of Saronite Chain Gang in place of Call to Arms. The Caverns Below – The quest reward, Crystal Core, will read: For the rest of the game, your minions are 4/4. (Down from 5/5) The Quest Rogue deck uses a strategy that’s strong against slow, control-heavy and fatigue decks, but struggles against most other deck archetypes. There’s a fine line between being powerful against very slow decks and being powerful versus virtually all non-aggressive strategies. By changing the quest reward to make the resulting minions 4/4 instead of 5/5, Quest Rogue should still be a reasonable option versus slow, extreme late-game decks, but offer a less polarized matchup with more moderate control decks.

So He Thought He Could Cast—And Did!

Now in its third year, the So You Think You Can Cast (SYTYCC) program has shone a light on some incredible Hearthstone casting talent in its time. One of this year’s selected entrants, Seven, took the time to share his thoughts on the experience with us—including how he built his portfolio, what he does to prepare ahead of the broadcast, and what he’d recommend to aspiring casters. Why did you apply to SYTYCC? “I’ve watched Hearthstone grow from the very beginning, from both a competitive and commentator standpoint, and casting has always been something I’ve had on my bucket list,” Seven says. “I’ve done a lot of show hosting with some fantastic and talented individuals over the years, but I’d never had an opportunity to cast a live match.” His solution? To make casting a live match one of his New Year’s resolutions. “I felt like I was ready,” he says. “To me, it didn’t matter if it was a local Fireside Gathering or entering the So You Think You Can Cast competition, I just wanted to see how I’d handle it—and, well, things turned out better than I could have imagined.” How did you put your submission together? Seven says his biggest challenge was finding a partner. “The irony was that after years of wanting to enter, all the people I had discussed casting with were either unavailable or had gone to work at Blizzard!” He took a chance on commenting on the announcement to look for a partner. “Every time someone would reach out, we’d hop on a quick call to see if we meshed well together,” Seven says. “Casting and hosting involves a lot of banter, so it was good to have that time to get to know the other person.” In many cases, it took several hours of rehearsal over the provided match just to learn the other person’s style—but he and Nicholas “DollaBilz” Bilz knocked out their entry on the second try. “In the end, I cast that single match for about 20 hours,” he says. DollaBilz and Seven casting together for the Hearthstone Collegiate Championship. All said and done, Seven says that reaching out to find a co-caster was the best decision he could have made. “I met a ton of talented individuals,” he says. “Everyone I worked with was utterly astounding.” What was your reaction when you found out you had been selected? “Stunned. Completely.” Seven knew that community heavyweights like Jace “DrJikininki” Garthright and others had entered, and says, “I figured my chance of making it was about zero.” He texted his partner when he got the email. “Poor Bilz, he was on an airplane when the email came across. His first tip was a barrage of 47 texts from me saying ‘DUDE!’ when he landed. Rumor has it his response scared half an airplane full of passengers.” How did you prepare to be on the casting desk? Seven played as many decks as he could, and listened to, watched, or read anything he could find. “On casting and practice run days, I’d wake up at 4:00 a.m. and kick on the stream for HCT Taipei, look at matchups, practice a few decks, and listen to [the] Value Town [podcast] over breakfast in the hotel lobby,” he says. “Between casts, we’d run through matchups, likely bans, and talking points,” Seven says. “After we finished for the day, it was back to the hotel for the same thing: HCT Taipei, practice, rinse, and repeat.” He says that, especially since The Witchwood had just been released, a lot of research on deck lists and strategies was required. What were the most memorable parts of your experience? Seven was overwhelmed at first. “I have a long history of hosting events and being on camera, but this had the added pressure of being something I’d wanted to do for a very long time,” he says. “My biggest worry was having production in my ear while trying to talk and sound like a normal human being. The crew was terrific, super flexible, willing to take and give feedback, and every day we made adjustments towards a better cast.” “One of my favorite moments came on our practice day,” he adds. Since their first assignment was to cast Collegiate Hearthstone, the casters were set to receive Tespa shirts to wear on set. “It turns out we had a problem—all the shirts we had on hand were women’s cuts and sizes. Now, I don’t know if there are pictures out there in the wild, but Bilz and WillScarlet both came out of the dressing room looking even more handsome than you could imagine.” Outside of that hilarity, Seven says the tournament itself was amazing. “The Penn State versus Waterloo matches were some of my favorites. Waterloo’s strategy was to target the exact lineup Penn State brought, and it worked incredibly well for them at the start of the day. After Waterloo dropped the next round, though, the two of them met again—with different results. The fact that Penn State was able to triumph was just a fantastic thing to watch,” he says. What did you learn about Hearthstone from this experience? “From a casting standpoint, it was amazing to see the level of production that goes into the event,” Seven says. “The crew that puts together the cast are so knowledgeable and understand Hearthstone so well. Even when we were done casting for the day, we spent a lot of time recapping plays and talking about what decks we were each playing.” Will you try to continue casting? “Absolutely!” Seven says he’s in this for the long haul and hopes to cast many more events in the future. If you get the chance, get involved with a local Fireside tournament, or put a bracket together for coworkers and friends.” He says not to worry about production value or how many people will see it—just do it. “That aside, pay attention to the HCT casting crew. They do an amazing job,” Seven adds. “Listen to how they describe matchups, win conditions, and tech decisions.” He says to think about how tournament scenarios are different from regular play, and to think about both decks when speaking—both to the other casters, and to your audience. “I wouldn’t recommend spending 20 hours casting the same seven-minute match,” he says with a laugh. To find these decks, we scoured the rankings for players that did well last week and picked out some interesting builds from amongst these top performers. We only selected decks that were played in 50 or more games at Legend level. Starting things off, we have Moxis from the EU server. Mixing some mechanics from The Witchwood with a few tricks from Kobolds and Catacombs, Moxis piloted this deck to an impressive 63% winrate over the course of 76 games. Utilizing cards such as Witching Hour, Silver Vanguard, and Carnivorous Cube, this deck looks to bypass the Battlecry restriction of Charged Devilsaur, sending it directly at your opponent multiple times throughout the match! Next up is evans from NA and their fishy take on Even Shaman. Posting an exciting 62% winrate over 74 games, evans looked to swarm opponents early with powerful tempo plays from Murkspark Eel, Vicious Scalehide, and Gentle Megasaur. If opponents are able to survive the onslaught, this deck has the ability to hold on in the late game with the triple threat of Al’Akir the Windlord, The Lich King, and Hagatha the Witch! Rounding out our list, we have an interesting take on an Odd Warrior build. Trahison from the Asia server used a clever combination of tempo and value to achieve a superb 69% winrate over 53 games. Combining the Rush package with the Warrior’s powerful control cards, this was the top performing Warrior deck overall last week. Noblegarden is Coming!

Grab a basket and prepare your finest brushes, because Noblegarden is coming next week! Noblegarden is a festival where we gather to celebrate the joys of life and friendship by in-egg-splicably dyeing eggs in bright colors and hanging out with rabbits. It’s gonna be egg-cellent! Tales from the Tavern: The Northgate Rebellion

In The Witchwood, we find ourselves thrust in a clash between the people of Gilneas and Hagatha the Witch—an evil shaman who has taken up residence in a nearby forest. Hagatha has twisted the residents of the forest with dark magic, and now seeks to expand her influence beyond the thicket. Though the Gilneans are alarmed by the witch’s recent advances, they are not afraid . . . conflict is all too common in the history of Gilneas. For Gilneas! The Kingdom of Gilneas has had a rather tenuous relationship with the Alliance. There was prosperity in the beginning, as trade flourished and the country forged ties across the realm. Unfortunately, this would not last. After war broke out with the Horde, King Genn Greymane withdrew Gilneas from the Alliance. No longer would the country’s resources be squandered on “other people’s troubles.” Genn Greymane began the construction of a massive wall separating Gilneas from the rest of Lordaeron, and thus began its period of isolation. The Greymane Wall The “Greymane Wall” sheltered Gilneas from the outside world’s numerous troubles. Mighty as it was, though, it could not protect the nation from inter turmoil. Lord Darius Crowley, a well-respected Gilnean noble, was once a close and loyal friend of King Greymane. However, when a significant portion of Crowley’s land was requisitioned for construction of the Greymane Wall, he was spurred into opposition. The loss of Crowley’s land, in addition to his undying support for the Alliance, incited conflict between the two. A Kingdom Divided Refusing to stand idly by as the world outside faced a new threat, Crowley sent a band of his own soldiers to assist Lady Jaina Proudmoore in the fight against the undead Scourge. Furious over Crowley’s disloyalty, King Greymane accused him of treason. Caring not for the king’s accusations or his handling of Gilnean affairs, Crowley entered into open rebellion against the king. Rallying the support of discontented Gilneans, Crowley led the Northgate Rebels to battle with Greymane and his loyalists. Crowley smuggled cannons and other weapons into Gilneas and hid them throughout the city in an attempt to gain the upper hand. Battle broke out across the kingdom. Crowley’s army rained artillery fire as they marched upon the capital. Nevertheless, the coup was destined for failure. With his kingdom in flames, King Greymane and his loyalists defeated the rebels and captured Darius Crowley. A New Era of Tranquility . . . or Endless Turmoil? The arrest of Crowley and his lieutenants marked the end of the Northgate Rebellion. The weapon caches Crowley hid throughout Gilneas remained scattered, and the rebels who managed to escape fled underground. King Greymane regained control of his kingdom, and tranquility fell over Gilneas. Regrettably, the people of Gilneas are not destined to know peace. While attentions were turned toward internals conflict, a far more sinister threat was taking shape in the forest. . . . Relive the Battle! Survival Guide: HCT Summer Playoffs 2018

Do you feel that heat? Spring is well under way, and summer is close by! The Summer Playoffs for the 2018 Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) are kicking off, and we’ve prepared this viewing guide to make sure you don’t miss any of the action. Format HCT 2018 utilizes the Swiss format. Players compete in seven Swiss rounds, with the top eight players advancing to the dual tournament playoffs. The top two players from each group will move on to play in the Seasonal Championship. The semifinals and finals will not be played. Matches will be best-of-five with one ban in the Conquest format. May 2018 Ranked Play Season – Garden Party

The May 2018 Ranked Play Season is now live—and we’re unveiling a new card back you can add to your collection! Lunara is the eldest daughter of Cenarius and a ferocious defender of the wild, but even the mightiest heroes need a place to unwind. No matter the season, it’s always spring in Lunara’s secret hideaway and that’s where she invites her friends to relax, enjoy cool breezes, and bask in soothing sun beams. Join her Garden Party—and earn the Lunara’s Garden card back—by playing Hearthstone during the month of May! These card backs replace the art decorating the reverse side of your cards and are a great way to show off your Hearthstone accomplishments. Add the Lunara’s Garden card back to your collection by winning 5 games at any Rank in either Standard or Wild Ranked Play modes. You’ll receive the Lunara’s Garden card back at the end of May Ranked Play Season in your Ranked Play reward chest. You earn Ranked Play reward chests based on your highest earned rank over the course of a Ranked Play season. Reward chests may contain seasonal card backs, Arcane Dust, and golden cards, and can be obtained by playing in either Standard or Wild Ranked Play modes. You’ll be awarded one chest per Ranked Play season based on your highest rank between the two modes. Don’t forget—the further you move up the Ranked Play ladder, the more of a head start you’ll get on climbing the ladder the following month. After the Ranked Play season ends, you’ll be reset four Ranks below the highest Rank you achieved the previous season once the new season begins.
