Off-Meta Spotlight - March 23, 2018

Greetings! One of the greatest joys in Hearthstone is watching players adapt and grow throughout the course of a competitive season. We’re always surprised and inspired by the inventive deck ideas that spring up on the ladder in the face of stiff competition. Today, we wanted to showcase a few of the awesome, creative decks that have been successfully climbing through the rank of Legend. To find these decks, we scoured the rankings for players that did well last week and picked out some interesting builds from amongst these top performers. We only selected decks that were played in 50 or more games at Legend level. Kicking off our trio we have a Dragon’s Fury Quest Mage deck by Fingon in the EU region. Fingon found spell-slinging success with this Quest Mage deck, clocking a 67% win rate at the higher end of Legend. If you’re looking to take advantage of Ice Block in Standard before it rotates out to the Hall of Fame, this deck provides you with a great opportunity! Leaving out staple Mage cards like Frost Bolt creates room for Dragon’s Fury to make an appearance, giving the deck an extra board-clearing punch. Meanwhile, Babbling Book fills multiple roles—it offers early turn plays and helps you complete Open the Waygate. After it’s done, you’re free to make some Arcane Giants and crush your opponent! Next up, we have Suimin’s Kingsbane-focused Rogue deck, which utilizes another Hall of Fame inductee: Cold Light Oracle. Suimin took this version of “Kingsbane Mill” to great heights on the SEA ladder, with an overall 64% win rate. Combining multiple weapon enhancements with Kingsbane’s ability to retain them, this Rogue deck is able to take exceptional advantage of the removal cards that rely on having a weapon. Suimin’s deck can be challenging to play, with some truly awesome interactions that’ll demand mastery of its ins and outs, but the learning process will be tons of fun. Last on our list—but certainly not least—we have Zetalot with a Gilded Dragon Control deck. Zetalot, who’s earned a reputation as a guiding light for Priest players, piloted this deck to an impressive 66% win rate over 123 games. Nearly reaching the pinnacle of the EU ranked ladder, Zetalot’s list initially appears to be an unassuming dragon/control hybrid. However, opponents quickly discovered out that this deck hides a deadly finishing option. Using the Coin from the single Gilded Gargoyle to help set up the finishing combo, this Priest pilot can combine the spell-pumping power of Prophet Velen with the burst of double Mind Blast to deliver 20 damage in a single turn! Each of these players displayed amazing skill on their journey through the ranks of Legend. However, a new challenge looms on the horizon: The Witchwood, and all the new cards and strategies that’ll come with it! With the introduction of Hearthstone’s newest set, we are excited to see what new, inventive decks players will come up with. The Winning Decks of the Wild Open Top 8

After regional qualifiers and playoffs, the top two Wild players from every region have been identified—and they now sit poised to fight for the title in the 2018 Hearthstone Wild Open’s playoffs on March 31. Competing on this unique and challenging format’s biggest stage will be: Americas Asia-Pacific China Europe Jonahrah Jinsoo LvGe Faeli dab RenoJackson Hamster alexMM A wide variety of decks brought these players through the tournament to this point. The most popular classes were Druid, for the combo potential of Aviana or for a Jade Druid list featuring Poison Seeds, and Paladin, for its powerful midrange variants featuring Shielded Minibot, Muster for Battle, and Loatheb. Some unique choices also made waves. A lone Aggro Shaman surprised for some early victories, while a Highlander Mage also appeared to be super effective. You can see the decks some of these players piloted to qualify for the Wild Open playoffs below. Some of these decks, like the Malygos and Jade Druids or Pirate Warriors, are very close to their Standard-legal counterparts (although some of the most powerful combinations aren’t possible in the absence of key Wild cards). If you’re looking for the Wild-est experience, you’ve got to load up something like Secret Paladin (featuring nine Wild-exclusive cards)—or, better still, the awesome Highlander Mage list running 11 Wild-exclusive cards, including favorites like Piloted Shredder, Sludge Belcher, Reno Jackson, and the unforgettable Dr. Boom! The live finals will be single elimination, with each best-of-five Conquest match requiring one class ban from the open deck lists. $25,000 USD is up for grabs, so these experts will have to bring their best Wild play on March 31. If you want to brush up before the tournament, you can check out the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe regional playoff VODs on Twitch. Designer Insights with Peter Whalen: Enrage Changes

First things first: we’re removing the Enrage keyword from Hearthstone. All the Enrage cards will keep their effects; we’re just rewording them without the keyword. For example, Angry Chicken will read “Has +5 Attack while damaged.” Our goal with this change is to clean up the game a little by removing a keyword we weren’t using much, but we also wanted to take the opportunity to share some of our general philosophy on keywords. Keywords in Hearthstone are the bolded words in the card text – they’re words that have a special meaning in the context of the game. We use them a lot; most of our sets have introduced at least one keyword and the Basic and Classic sets have a bunch. Why are keywords helpful? Keywords can make learning cards easier. Once you know a keyword, it can boil down a complex idea and help you understand a new card more quickly. Keywords are flavorful. They tell a story – Discover, Recruit, Taunt; these all help the game come alive. Keywords condense card text. This leads to more readable cards that fit better in the frame. Keywords give us mechanical hooks. So we can make cards like “Give your Taunt minions +2/+2.” So why not make lots and lots of keywords? In the extreme, we could keyword everything – the “Kel’Thuzading” keyword would mean “At the end of each turn, summon all friendly minions that died this turn” and the Doomsaying keyword would mean “At the start of your turn, destroy ALL minions.” That feels a bit silly – because it is! Keywords aren’t all upside, so it’s worth taking a look at which keywords are worth keeping. Ultimately, we have keywords to make cards easier to understand. The best keywords appear a lot, are flavorful, and give us useful mechanical hooks. In the last year, we added two examples that we expect to be permanent: Poisonous and Lifesteal. These are great abilities that make minions a bit more interesting – they alter combat math, change which minions you prioritize, and spice up gameplay. The full text for both of these abilities is also fairly long – without a keyword, it’d be hard to pair them with much else. So let’s take a look at Enrage. Enrage means “While damaged, this minion has a new power.” It’s on nine cards: six from the Basic and Classic sets, two from Whispers of the Old Gods, and one from Goblins vs. Gnomes. Part of the reason we haven’t used it much is that it’s a difficult keyword to design for: minions in Hearthstone don’t survive very long, especially once they’ve been damaged. Instead, we’ve favored cards with triggered abilities that encourage you to damage them multiple times, like Acolyte of Pain and Rotface. These lead to more interesting gameplay as you try to maximize the number of times they get damaged. How well, then, is Enrage serving us as a keyword? First, it’s not clear that Enrage is actually any easier to understand than “while damaged”. It is certainly flavorful though, and does shrink the card text a little. On the other hand, we haven’t made any cards that key off of Enrage minions and aren’t likely to in the future. Overall, Enrage isn’t doing very much work for us, we haven’t used it in a while, and it isn’t on very many cards, so we’re cleaning up the game a little bit and removing it. Even & Odd Two new deck types are coming to Hearthstone in The Witchwood expansion: Even and Odd decks. One of the major goals the team has for every expansion is to introduce a variety of fun and interesting new strategies to learn, play, and tinker with! Enter Baku the Mooneater and Genn Greymane. Baku gives you an upgraded Hero Power, while Genn reduces the cost of your Hero Power to 1 mana. Each effect occurs at the start of the game—just for including one of these minions in your deck!—but such power comes at a price: building decks with cards that have only even or odd mana costs! Arena Updates We’re trying out a new Arena format to make choosing cards more interesting and skill testing. New Draft Rules: Each pick in an Arena draft will now feature 3 cards of relatively equal power level, but mixed rarities. Picks 1, 10, 20, and 30 will continue to have a guaranteed Rare quality card or better. The increased chance to draft cards from the most recent expansion has been removed until the launch of The Witchwood. New Arena cards chosen at BlizzCon are being added to the Arena for a limited time. All cards that are excluded from the Arena draft pool remain unchanged. All the other existing Arena rules in place that affect appearance rates are unchanged. Bug Fixes and Updates Hearthstone now loads faster on many devices. Fixed several minor UI and visual issues. Players can now create Blizzard Battle.net accounts via Facebook. Rakanishu now correctly displays in history during the King Togwaggle Dungeon Run encounter. [Mobile] Alternate Heroes that you do not own should now display their names in the Collection Manager. [iOS] Due to changes in iTunes, it will no longer be possible to purchase one-time only items for multiple Blizzard accounts from a single iTunes log in. Each account holder must log into iTunes separately to make those purchases. [iOS] Older iOS devices are now more stable when changing menus.

Odd Occurrences The Witchwood’s growing influence drives even the redoubtable citizens of Gilneas to fearful flights of fancy. Uneasy townsfolk share bizarre stories of black cats with knowing eyes, and giant moths that peer into windows during the dead of night. Stranger still, they all seem to share the same horrid dream, night after night: a feeling of unspeakable dread as they watch huge, spectral fangs devour the moon. Embrace the oddness of the Witchwood! Include Baku the Mooneater in a deck containing only cards with odd mana costs to gain an upgraded Hero Power at the start of the game. Getting Even Striking back against the fear that grips the city requires iron discipline and sacrifice. Superstition must be cast aside in favor of strict order. Those with the will to banish this evil must find it in them to do what must be done—even when close to the limits of their strength. Under King Greymane’s leadership, you’ll need to stay firm and forsake odd-cost cards, but a 1 mana Hero Power may be just the thing to make the most of every turn you get. Eerie Echoes Shifting shapes and ephemeral phantasms manifest out of the fog—the curse on the Witchwood has unsettling effects on both material beings and spells alike. Some will Echo, reproducing themselves. The wily can channel this spectral side effect to their advantage: cards with Echo can be played again and again on the same turn—as long as you have the mana to pay the price. The Beast Within The cursed denizens of the Witchwood will not find the people of Gilneas to be easy prey. Even the city’s humblest citizen hides a beastly secret: they are Worgen, capable of assuming the form of a hulking, ferocious wolf-beast when threatened. Each turn they are in your hand, these cards swap their attack and health. Spring them on an opponent when their form best matches your desired function. Unearthly Rage The power emanating from the Witchwood imbues feral vigor into those who are in tune with their predatory instincts, urging them to unnatural aggression and startling speed. Minions with the new Rush keyword can attack opposing minions—but not Heroes—on the same turn they are played. Rush offers the immediate gratification of Charge without its game-ending potential, so you’ll encounter more minions that hit the ground running with this new keyword. Power Calls to Power The forest’s depths always harbored dangerous inhabitants, but now, the curse calls them forth with a dirge only they can hear. There are tales of weeping, ghostly maidens that drift at the edge of vision, and shifting elementals who steal the faces of men. Even the Emerald Dragonflight is not immune to the curse’s influence. The truly unlucky report encounters with a vengeful spirit who seems to know their thoughts, and who speaks lies in the voices of friends and allies. The Thrill of the Hunt In The Witchwood’s challenging single-player mode, Monster Hunt, Gilneas’ veteran monster hunters are called to cleanse the forest of its darkness. Similar to the Dungeon Run from Kobolds & Catacombs, players will defeat bosses and collect their bounties to build a deck that will keep them alive as they stalk their quarry deeper and deeper into The Witchwood. Monster Hunt will begin two weeks after The Witchwood launches. More details will be revealed as the start of the hunt draws near. Off-Meta Spotlight - March 9, 2018

Greetings! One of the greatest joys in Hearthstone is watching players adapt and grow throughout the course of a competitive season. We’re always surprised and inspired by the inventive deck ideas that spring up on the ladder in the face of stiff competition. Today, we wanted to highlight some of the more unorthodox decks that have seeing success on the ladder at the rank of Legend. To find these decks, we scoured the rankings for players that did well last week and picked out some interesting builds from amongst these top performers. We only selected decks that were played in 50 or more games at Legend level. Our first deck comes to us from Growgo on the EU server. Winning 63% of his matches over an amazing 149 games played, Growgo showed true dedication and skill with this build. His take on Warrior looks to gain armor and control the board before eventually winning with Coldlight Oracle and Dead Man’s Hand. That win percentage over 149 games show how consistent this deck can be once you learn its ins and outs. Next up, we have Makki91 and his Malygos Druid deck. Versions of this deck have been showing up more frequently lately, but Makki91’s use of Twig of the World Tree and Malygos to set up huge Swipe and Moonfire turns helped him reach a 62% winrate over 50 games, bringing this deck into the spotlight. Last, but certainly not least, we have Mowah from the EU server with a control Paladin deck. Mowah used this deck to set up different victory conditions for different encounters, resulting in a 66% winrate over 84 games. While this Paladin deck can win with minions in the midgame, it can also pull out victories in slower matches by utilizing a combo with Uther of the Ebon Blade and the Four Horseman. Congrats to each of these players on an awesome showing! Try these decks out on ladder and let us know what you think. These can all take some practice to get the hang of—we’ve seen people’s winrate with these decks start low and slowly increase as they get better at the combos. Malto’s Guided Tours: Return to The Frozen Throne!

Greetings, adventurer! Once again, we find ourselves in frigid Northrend, where the Lich King’s unholy influence still lingers. It wasn’t long ago that you joined me for One Night in Karazhan, so I hope you’re well rested—this fight will test us in every manner possible! During our last audience with the Lord of the Scourge, we turned to the might of the light and ended his reign using the Priest class. Today, we look to defeat the Lich King using the remaining eight classes. The Frozen Throne The Lich King is not one to fight fair—he utilizes powerful, unorthodox strategies unique to the class he’s facing. To counter him, we’ll need to specifically tailor our decks for each class. Shuffle your cards and put on your thinking beanie, because we’re in for some cold, treacherous battles! Druid Purge the Weak At the start of match, the Lich King will destroy all minions that cost (3) or less in your deck, hand, and on the battlefield. To combat this tactic, we’ll build a deck with some key essentials, then load the rest of our list with cards that we can spare to lose. Druid Hunter The Hunted The Lich King will begin his turn by dealing 2 damage to you for each minion you have in your deck. This can be quite the attack! However, we will be returning the favor by using our beasts to aggressively remove this scourge from Azeroth. Hunter Mage The True Lich In one of his most diabolic moves yet, the Lich King begins this battle by setting our health to one! For this encounter, we’ll rely on the might of our minions to hold the board and bring us from the brink of defeat. Mage Paladin Fallen Champions By taking control of each minion that perishes on your side of the battlefield, the Lich King puts into effect the plan he started at Light’s Hope Chapel. Teamwork is key to victory in this battle! These minions are small on their own, but each serves a greater purpose by empowering their allies. Paladin Rogue The Price of Power The Lich King thinks Rogues are only as powerful as their tricks, and looks to cripple us by destroying every spell in our hand and deck. Who needs magic when you’ve got well-armed friends? Each minion brings something different to empower this deck as we rob the Lich King of the joy of victory. Rogue Shaman Necrotic Plague It is well known that one of the Lich King’s greatest weaknesses is the 4-mana 7/7. To help avoid such an encounter, he sets the attack and health of all minions in your hand and deck to 1/1. Luckily for us, Shaman has more than enough experience utilizing smaller minions. Use your minions to establish your presence on the battlefield, then evolve beyond the reach of the Lich King’s plague. Shaman Warlock Soul Reaper THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE . . . of each card in your deck, because the Lich King will deal two damage, at the start of his first turn, for each duplicate card in your deck. There is no better icebreaker than hellfire! While we may be limited to one copy per card, the demonic spells and summons of the Warlock are more than enough to warm the heart of any Lich. Warlock Warrior The True King 100 armor. One. Hundred. Armor. The Lich King starts off by granting himself 100 armor. Regardless of how high a wall the Lich King hides behind, the rage of the Warrior is more than enough to tear it down. Use the damage that would harm others to empower your minions and grow your army. Warrior I hope you find these decks useful as you lay siege to Icecrown Citadel. Just be sure you don’t let the Lich King’s icy touch corrupt you—it’ll take quite some time for your soul to thaw out! What Sets the Pros Apart: Tournament Deck Lineups

In this entry in our What Sets the Pros Apart series, none other than Julien “Cydonia” Perrault is here to educate us on how to build a deck lineup to play in a Hearthstone tournament. Perhaps best known for his victory in the 2016 Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) Americas Spring Championship, Cydonia has remained active in the competitive Hearthstone scene, and often provides excellent advice for how to approach the game at the highest level on his Twitch stream. I want to compete in a tournament. How do I decide which decks to play? According to Cydonia, there are a few layers to work through. The first one is simply knowing if you can play all the best decks equally (or have the cards to make them). If not, you should play what you have and are best with. If you can choose to build any deck, though, Cydonia says, “If they can be countered and you expect a lot of people to bring the best decks, then counter them. If they can’t be countered, play them.” He goes on to add that if there is an asymmetrical balance to the metagame (where rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock, for example), you also have to predict what people will bring correctly. How do I change my strategy based on the tournament’s rules? Cydonia says the first thing to figure out (if applicable) is what class you will be banning. “Figure out which deck to ban, then tech the other decks according to the rest of the expected meta,” Cydonia explains. In many tournament environments, deck lists will be open, meaning you can see exactly what your opponent has brought—but they also can see what you have. “For open deck lists, established strategies are usually better, since you cannot count on your opponent not knowing how to play against your deck,” he says. “You also can’t omit key cards and hope your opponent will play around them.” What is the most effective way to practice for a tournament? There are two stages to tournament practice, Cydonia says: early on, you should play a wide range of decks to get comfortable with your options. As you get closer to the actual date of the competition, however, he recommends focusing on specific, tricky matches: “Test the matchups that are harder to pilot and not as prevalent on ladder,” he says. In terms of his own practice and preparation regimen, Cydonia says, “I make sure I get enough games with all the decks to have a good feel for them, then try to practice all the difficult matchups. If there isn’t enough time to practice everything, I talk with other players to figure out a good plan and mulligan strategy for every matchup I expect to face.” He says there is no specific routine for actual events, since travel requirements and environments vary, but he makes sure to have eaten and always have lots of water to drink. What should I do to review after a tournament? A step that top players take, Cydonia encourages players to review their games once the tournament is over. “Record the games and watch them with other players to spot mistakes or alternative lines of play,” he says. “Evaluate the preparation that was done, and identify causes for wins and losses.” He notes that while what’s being played will change from one tournament to the next, “You’ve got to be good at correctly figuring out what was done well, what went wrong, and separating out what can be improved.” All of this excellent advice can be combined with other skills that set pro players apart to get better at the game! HCT 2018: Everything You Need to Know About Seasonal Playoffs

The Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) 2018’s Season 1 is almost at an end! This first point-earning season of 2018 culminates in the Summer Playoffs, which lead into the first seasonal championship of the year—the Summer Championship. If you’ve been gunning to qualify for a Seasonal Playoff this year, we’ve got you covered. Iron out your dates and plan your travel with more information about HCT 2018’s Playoff locations! Format HCT 2018 will utilize the Swiss format. Players can expect to compete in seven rounds of Swiss, which will progress into a dual-tournament top eight playoffs. The top two players from each group will move on to play in the Seasonal Championship. The semifinals and finals will not be played. Matches will be best-of-five with one ban in the Conquest format, and make use of only cards in Standard rotation. Competing in Playoffs If you’re new to competitive Hearthstone, there are several ways you can qualify for Seasonal Playoffs. You can play on the Ranked ladder or compete at Tour Stops to earn Hearthstone Competitive Points. If you earn enough of these points in a season, you’ll be able to qualify for the Hearthstone Masters program and Seasonal Playoffs. If ladder climbing and travelling the world aren’t for you, you can also choose to compete in Challenger Cups and at Tavern Hero Qualifiers. Challenger Cups are online cups that progress you into the Challenger Finals, while Tavern Hero Qualifiers are offline events in your local Hearthstone community (hosted at approved Fireside Gatherings). Designer Insights: Upcoming Arena Changes

There are some exciting changes coming to the Arena in the upcoming 10.4 update! Watch the video below to get the full details on the update from Lead Systems Designer Kris Zierhut. Here’s a quick recap of the upcoming Arena changes: Each Arena pick in a draft will feature three cards of relatively equal power level, but different rarities. Picks one, 10, 20, and 30 will continue to have a guaranteed Rare quality card or better. The increased chance to see cards from the most recent expansion has been temporarily disabled in Update 10.4. The new Arena cards that were decided on at BlizzCon will also be added in Update 10.4 for a limited time. All cards that are excluded from the Arena draft pool remain unchanged. HCT Takes to the Tundra for HCT Toronto!

HCT Toronto is a Grand Prix-style Tour Stop taking place March 9 through 11, with 191 Hearthstone Competitive Points and $15,000 USD on the line! It’s also the final Tour Stop for Season 1, so make sure to sign up. Tournament Information HCT Toronto will feature a 256-player Swiss bracket that will narrow down to a single elimination playoff. All matches are best-of-five, played in Conquest format with one ban. Deck lists will be open, and it is a bring-your-own-device tournament. The event will take place at the EGLX gaming convention—the same location as the first Canadian HCT Major in 2016! Registration requires the purchase of an EGLX Hearthstone competitor pass by 2:00 p.m. EST on March 3. Registration for the tournament requires pre-purchase of an EGLX Hearthstone competitor pass. Pass sales will cease on March 3, 2:00 p.m. EST. Register Now If you have any questions about the tournament or its registration, reach out to the tournament organizer via email. I, for one, could use a night off to unwind from our last adventure with the League of Explorers. . . . Shuffle your decks and lace up your dancing shoes, because we’re heading out for One Night in Karazhan! As we boogie our way through Medivh’s enchanted tower, be sure to enjoy the bewitching entertainment and delectable delights! Have fun by all means, but stay sharp—the magic that floods these walls has created some exciting challenges, as well as made way for some unwanted guests. During this celebration, we’ll venture through four levels of the tower. In the Parlor, we will need to deal with a set of ferocious tableware that seems to have acquired a mind of its own. March 2018 Ranked Play Season – Mammoth Memories

The March 2018 Ranked Play Season is now live—and we’re unveiling a new card back you can add to your collection! The Year of the Mammoth was a big year, but the time to welcome a new Hearthstone year fast approaches! Give good old Mammoth a proper send off before the new year arrives, and you’ll pick up a Mammoth memento along the way. Add the Year of the Mammoth card back to your collection by playing Hearthstone during the month of March! These card backs replace the art decorating the reverse side of your cards and are a great way to show off your Hearthstone accomplishments. Add the Year of the Mammoth card back to your collection by winning 5 games at any rank in either Standard or Wild Ranked Play modes. You’ll receive the Year of the Mammoth card back at the end of March’s Ranked Play Season in your Ranked Play reward chest. You earn Ranked Play reward chests based on your highest earned rank over the course of a Ranked Play season. Reward chests may contain seasonal card backs, Arcane Dust, and golden cards, and can be obtained by playing in either Standard or Wild Ranked Play modes. You’ll be awarded one chest per Ranked Play season based on your highest rank between the two modes. Don’t forget—the further you move up the Ranked Play ladder, the more of a head start you’ll get on climbing the ladder the following month. After the Ranked Play season ends, you’ll be reset four ranks below the highest rank you achieved the previous season once the new season begins. If you manage to reach Legend, you’ll be reset to rank 4. Commemorate the turning of the Hearthstone Year in March’s Ranked Play Season, Mammoth Memories!
