Upcoming Balance Changes – Update 10.2

0 komentar

In the upcoming 10.2 update, we will be making balance changes to the following cards: Bonemare - Now costs 8 mana. (Up from 7) Bonemare has been quite strong in both constructed and Arena. It has a big, immediate impact on the board, and since it’s neutral, it’s been finding its way into a wide variety of decks. Increasing its mana cost by 1 will give opponents more time to utilize powerful late-game cards to counteract Bonemare’s effect on the board. Corridor Creeper - Now has 2 Attack. (Down from 5) Due to the way that Corridor Creeper’s mana cost reduction works, it can cause big swings based on whether or not it happens to be in-hand at the start of the game. Since it’s a very strong neutral card, Corridor Creeper has been played by a lot of classes. By lowering its attack, we reduce the overall swing potential and power level of the card, but still allow players who draw it early to benefit from having a low-cost minion to play when the game state is ideal. Patches the Pirate - No longer has Charge. As we move closer to the new Hearthstone Year, we had some concerns about allowing Patches to remain in his current state after moving out of Standard. Patches’ strength has caused almost every class to add some Pirates just to benefit from him, and his early game power forces control decks to include a good answer to him. This change should give Wild players more flexibility when building their decks. Removing Charge will lower his power level, ensuring he shows up in fewer decks and allowing opposing players some additional time to respond to Patches, making him less “in charge” of the early game. Raza the Chained - Now reads: Battlecry: If your deck has no duplicates, your Hero Power costs (1) this game. In a similar vein to Patches the Pirate, we had some concerns about allowing Raza to remain in his current state forever. Raza is currently an important combo piece along with Shadowreaper Anduin, and can lead to games that rely heavily on drawing him by turn 5. Adjusting his Battlecry will lower his overall power level when combined with Shadowreaper Anduin in Standard, and keep his power level reasonable in Wild as we prepare for the new Hearthstone Year. Once these card changes are live with Update 10.2 next month, players will be able to disenchant the changed cards for their full Arcane Dust value for two weeks. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you in the tavern!

Opening Moves: Those First 5 Turns

0 komentar

Every day this week, we’ve had a little bit of wisdom to share with you on the earliest stages of a game of competitive Hearthstone—from deciding on a win condition all the way up to your early game strategy after the mulligan. Today, we close out the week with some cards hitting the table, as we discuss the first five turns of the game. With your deck defined, fleshed out, an opening hand drawn, and an idea of which foot you’re starting on, the first five turns play a definitive role in shaping the outcome of your game. Aggro decks often empty their hands entirely and win or lose as early as the fifth turn. Tempo decks—looking to get strong board presence combined with removal, but with less pressure on their opponent’s health total early—need to clear up aggressive enemy boards, or be chipping away at a more control-oriented opponent’s life total. Control and combo decks will be trying to stabilize and draw to the high-value plays they need to make in the mid-game to outlast faster decks, or dig for their win conditions early on in games that look to go longer. Turning Up the Heat Is my opponent playing to set up specific cards? If they don't utilize their mana, can I rule out the possibility they have certain cards in hand? Evaluate the game state. If you're in danger of falling behind, play ambitiously and take risks; if you're ahead, focus on denying options for your opponent. David "shoop" Steinberg Every deck’s early game play will be characterized by which resources the player is expending to move towards their win condition. Aggro decks will use up their cards quickly; tempo decks are willing to trade a little bit of life and some (but not all) of their cards for board control; control decks will pay with their life (literally!) for card advantage as they hold out for board clears and ways to gain life or armor. Navigating these early turns correctly is crucial. For example, if two aggressive decks meet, there are a ton of moving parts to every turn that each player must consider. You want to deal as much damage as possible to your opponent to win the race, but as you exhaust your hand, taking a critical trade on the board to protect your life total and deal more damage over time (at the expense of a few points on the turn you take the trade) might be the difference between winning and losing. And there you have it! We’ve reached the end of Opening Moves week. Hopefully these short daily lessons have given you a peek into what complexities the early game in Hearthstone has to offer. Let us know what you thought of the series in the comments, and stay tuned for more Hearthstone esports content in the weeks to come.

Greetings! One of the greatest joys in Hearthstone is watching players adapt and grow throughout the course of a competitive season. We’re always surprised and inspired by the inventive deck ideas that spring up on the ladder in the face of stiff competition. Today, we wanted to showcase a few of the awesome, creative decks that have been successfully climbing through the rank of Legend. To find these decks, we scoured the rankings for players that did well last week, and picked out some interesting decks from amongst these top performers. We only selected decks that were played in 50 or more games at Legend level. First up we have MACKENSEIZE and his “Big” Druid deck. Mixing some great strategy with newer cards, along with some masterful navigating, has led to this iteration being the highest ranked Druid deck on the North American ladder. Next up, we have 营地丨幽兰戴尔丶 . Sporting one of the best winrates on China’s ladder, this build of Warrior has achieved an impressive 64% winrate! Lastly, we have a newer take on an old favorite. . . Miracle Rogue! Aiversons took this version of Rogue and piloted it to high legend with an outstanding 74%(!) winrate on the EU ladder. Each of these players showed great skill and put up impressive numbers with some awesome deck choices. Congrats, and good luck as you continue your climbs!

Upcoming Ranked Play Update

0 komentar

Beginning with the start of the March 2018 Ranked Play season, we’re making improvements to Hearthstone’s Ranked Play ladder experience. Join Hearthstone Game Director Ben Brode as he explains what to expect, as well as the philosophy and intentions behind the update: Here are the upcoming changes you can look forward to: You’ll earn card backs by winning five Ranked games during the season, regardless of what rank you achieve. It will no longer be necessary to reach Rank 20 to earn these card backs. After each game, the UI will let you know how many wins you still need to earn the Ranked season card back. You can check your progress between games by visiting the Quest Log. All Ranks will now have 5 stars. Player ranks will reset to exactly 4 ranks below your current standing, including the number of stars in that rank you earned. Here are some examples: Rank 14, 2 stars resets to Rank 18, 2 stars Rank 1, 3 stars resets to Rank 5, 3 stars Rank 10, 0 stars resets to Rank 14, 0 stars Players at Legend reset to Rank 4, 0 stars Moving to the New System Some elements of the old and new systems will exist simultaneously when we first make the transition: During the February Ranked Play Season, you’ll still need to reach Rank 20 to receive your Ranked season card back. At the season’s end, your rank will reset to four ranks below your current standing. Starting with the March Ranked Play Season, you’ll only be required to win 5 games to receive your seasonal card back. At the season’s end, your rank will reset to four ranks your current standing. The update should allow players at the top of the ladder to jump into the action immediately by matching them against similarly-ranked opponents, providing more engaging matches while reducing the time it will take for them to climb to a rank appropriate for their skill-level each season. This in turn should improve matchmaking for everyone who plays Hearthstone, including those climbing the ladder for the first time. Since players will be more evenly matched at the start of each season, they can make immediately meaningful progress toward their ladder ranking against players of similar caliber. We want the experience of climbing the Hearthstone Ranked Play ladder to be fun, challenging, and satisfying for everyone. We hope you enjoy the updates to Ranked Play, and we’re looking forward to your feedback. See you on the ladder!

Opening Moves: Ahead or Behind

0 komentar

Over the past three days, we’ve found a win condition, built a deck to support it, and successfully chosen an opening hand during the mulligan—now, it’s time to put all of that planning into practice as the game begins. As the game begins, how your individual turns will play out is dictated by whether you are playing from ahead or behind—or, simply put, whether you are winning or losing given the current game state. When the game starts, the player who goes first is theoretically ahead, since they get to “ask the question” first with their initial play. If they get on the board, the player going second now must “answer” that play, and who is doing the asking or answering will shift and change over the course of the game from there. Evaluating your opening hand, you’ll have some judgements to make about how to proceed. What are you anticipating from your opponent? Is your best play to go aggressive, or do you need to hold on to cards to maximize their value later? Before your first card ever hits the board, you need to know where you intend to take the game, and tweak your game plan as your opponent responds in kind. Staying Alive When you're ahead, you need to convert your lead into a win before your opponent reaches their win condition. Push to deal damage before they can clear the board. If your opponent needs minions to buff, keep their board clear so they can't catch up effectively. David "shoop" Steinberg Thinking critically, even in this early stage before you’ve started to introduce new variables from your opponent, is a great way to improve your odds of winning. Suppose you’re going second against a Warlock who has played a Flame Imp on his first turn. Do you have a way in your hand to remove it from the board? Is doing so the right use of that card, given what else you are now expecting from the Warlock having seen it? There are also gambles and risks to consider. Maybe you use The Coin to play a Novice Engineer, since that’s the only play you have available. Would you have been better served to risk taking some chip damage from the Flame Imp to keep The Coin? If your Warlock opponent ignores your Novice Engineer to do extra damage, maybe your gamble will pay off, and you can utilize another minion or spell in tandem with it to kill the Flame Imp next turn. Or, maybe you gave them an easy way to cycle with Mortal Coil… This is all just in preparation for the very first turn—so don’t miss Day 5, when we’re going to look at how you can navigate a couple of critical scenarios over the first five turns! We round out the early game and the end of Opening Moves week tomorrow.

Opening Moves: Mulligans

0 komentar

Now that we’ve identified our win condition and filled in our deck around it, we’re finally ready to take on an opponent. To do that, we need to learn the ins and outs of how to correctly mulligan cards for our opening hand. If you've played Hearthstone, you already know that how many cards you are offered in your mulligan is determined by whether you’re going first or second. Players going first get three cards in their opening hand (and draw a fourth as their first turn starts), while the player going second gets four cards (plus The Coin). Before play begins, each player can shuffle any number of the cards they were initially dealt back into their deck for a chance at something different. What you keep or throw back depends on multiple variables, but there are some general rules of thumb worth keeping in mind. Mulligan Advice Take your time, and think through the matchup carefully. What cards set you up for the best early game, and which cards are such a huge swing that keeping them in the opening hand is right—even though you may not play them in the first few turns? Ray "Astrogation" Zhou Throwing back your entire hand is always risky, so until you’re comfortable with the ins and outs of piloting your deck after many games, holding on to at least one card that you’re offered can be a good idea. This becomes less of an issue in aggressive decks, where you really want to get early game plays, but it can be practical to use as a starting point if you’re playing a combo-style or control deck, where you could accidentally end up with a starting hand of all late-game cards. You’ll also want to mulligan differently based on what you’re up against. If you are playing a Zoo Warlock deck (that runs a lot of low-cost minions, looking to end games quickly), your mulligan strategy against a Druid opponent might vary based on whether you think they’re playing an Aggro Druid or a late game Druid style. Against the former, you need to make sure you can contest the board and get efficient early game trades; against the latter, you’d rather have cards that can snowball and get more value over multiple turns, like Darkshire Councilman. The best advice you’ll ever get regarding mulligans is just to keep practicing. The more games you play, the better you’ll become at navigating your own deck, as well as knowing what types of decks you’re up against when you face the different classes! Hang in there for Day 4, when it’s time for us to decide on our early game strategy.

Malto's Guided Tours: Curse of Naxxramas

0 komentar

Welcome brave hero! It is always a pleasure to see a friendly face here in the Tavern. For those of you who may not know, my name is Malto, and I help to guide courageous players, like yourselves, to understand the intricacies of Hearthstone. Over the years, I’ve met with veteran players who regale patrons with their amazing tales. These include such triumphs as overcoming Kel’Thuzad, and his Cult of the Damned in The Curse of Naxxramas! If you weren’t around in those days, I can see how stories of plague-filled escapades may pique your interest. Some of you may even be interested in venturing into Naxxramas to create your own legend. If you’re daring enough to assault the necropolis, I offer some helpful advice. Naxxramas consists of four wings and ends with a showdown in the lair of Kel’Thuzad. Your journey into this vile place will first take you through four wings guarded by a myriad of grotesque beasts and abominations—a misshapen menagerie of minions who serve the Lich King in life . . . or undeath. After defeating these villainous foes, you will be admitted into the Frostwyrm Lair, where you’ll battle Sapphiron, and then Kel’Thuzad himself! As this is a long and perilous journey, let us dive right in regarding how to overcome each of these adversaries. The Arachnid Quarter Anub'Rekhan Grand Widow Faerlina Maexxna The Plague Quarter Noth the Plaguebringer Heigan the Unclean Loatheb The Military Quarter Instructor Razuvious Gothik the Harvester The Four Horsemen The Construct Quarter Patchwerk Grobbulus Gluth Thaddius Frostwyrm Lair Sapphiron Kel'Thuzad I hope this information proves useful as you traverse the dangers of Naxxramas. I eagerly await news of your victory over the fearsome lich Kel’Thuzad! The adventure continues! Next, we will journey to Blackrock Mountain to tackle the dangerous forces of Nefarian. Join me next week and we will show that giant lizard what a true Champion of Hearthstone can do!

Opening Moves: Filling a Deck

0 komentar

Now that you’ve identified your win condition, it’s time to finish building your competitive deck. While finding that cool combination that will end the game in style is great, the real skill to building a deck isn’t figuring that out—it’s finding the cards to surround them with that will allow you to pull it off! Each class has slightly different tools to manage this, so understanding what your chosen class can and can’t do is important. If you’re looking to build a Hunter deck and have chosen a handful of Hunter spells as your way to finish off your opponent, you’ll quickly discover that there aren’t many reliable ways for Hunters to draw additional cards—so you can’t guarantee you’ll be able to find those spells after all. Back to the drawing board! Finishing Your Deck Figure out what plan your deck has—the task of the specific deck. When you play a bunch of games, if a card doesn't work, you replace it. Think about how another card would fit into that spot in the deck. Thomas "Sintolol" Zimmer The cards you are using for your win condition will determine how you round out the rest of your deck. If you want to play aggressively and win with multiple minions on the board, there’s no time to waste drawing cards—if you run out of gas (cards) in the tank (your hand), your win condition didn’t work out that time. If you’re looking to stall for a fatal combo or just hold the line to deny your opponent’s win condition, you’ll be looking for spells to clear the board, or ways to heal yourself or armor up. Exactly what you end up using to diffuse situations like these will depend on your class. As an example, let’s say that your free Death Knight from Knights of the Frozen Throne was Uther of the Ebon Blade. The win condition is built in: If you have all four Horsemen (summoned one at a time by your Hero Power), you win the game automatically. Cool! But how are you going to survive until you draw Uther of the Ebon Blade, play him, and manage to use your Hero Power four (or more!) times? You might decide that you want to try and pull off multiple Hero Power uses in a single turn and add Auctionmaster Beardo—that’s a good start. You’re going to need cheap spells to activate Auctionmaster Beardo’s effect, too, so cards like Burgly Bully or Hydrologist look good. None of these cards can be played until you’re ready to end the game, though, so you still need to fill in that space. Paladin doesn’t have much in the way of card draw, so you’re probably looking for a mixture of the things Paladins do best—putting down powerful Taunt minions and using a variety of heals to stay afloat! With cards like Forbidden Healing, Wickerflame Burnbristle, Spikeridged Steed, Sunkeeper Tarim, or Ragnaros, Lightlord, you’ve suddenly got a mixture of tools that might just do the trick. Tomorrow we’ll queue up against an opponent with our killer new deck, and make our first game-time decision—what to keep in the mulligan!

Opening Moves: Win Conditions

0 komentar

Welcome to Opening Moves week! Across all Blizzard esports, we’re celebrating the start of new competitive years—and the start of new matches in those esports. Each day this week, you’ll find a new short story on every Blizzard esport about elements of the earliest portions of a competitive match. Let’s dive right in! For Day 1 of Opening Moves week in Hearthstone, we’re starting right from the beginning with the first thing you have to do to get a game underway—namely, building a competitive deck. The first step in building a great deck is identifying your win condition. Do you want to win the game on the board by playing multiple minions and closing it out with Savage Roar or Bloodlust? Maybe you’ve crafted a crazy combo that requires multiple pieces—perhaps pairing Malygos with some damage spells? Or what about simply surviving your opponent, wearing them down with removal and eventually running them out of resources? Choosing a Win Condition "You basically have to decide what you want to do with your deck. You can be defensive or aggressive, or you can be mid-range; then, depending on that, you pick a class, and the class you pick also helps decide your archetype." Nicolas "TicTac" Gillet Choosing a win condition can often be difficult, because some win conditions aren’t immediately apparent. If you look back at the deck lists for the HCT World Championship, you’ll find things like Aggro Druid using Savage Roar, but you’ll also find complex interactions to facilitate Cube Warlock (which uses Carnivorous Cube and Dark Pact to create additional copies of Doomguard or Voidlord) or Highlander Priest (which looks to put together Prophet Velen, Mind Blast, and Holy Smite after having played both Raza the Chained and Shadowreaper Anduin—which is a lot of combo requirements!). There are also decks that don’t run any apparent win condition cards at all and simply look to win by taking favorable trades, like Tempo Rogue. As you improve as a player, you’ll move from the more obvious win condition cards (C’thun, minions with Charge, spells that you can kill your opponent directly with, etc.) toward some of these more complicated combinations. You may also find that your win condition requires some support to pull off—so join us tomorrow for Day 2, where we’ll evaluate how to round out a deck after you’ve picked your win condition!

A Mammoth of a Year Has Crowned a New Hearthstone World Champion!

A ray of sunshine brightened up a long line of people waiting eagerly outside the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam. Hours before the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) World Championship’s fourth day, attendees had queued up in front of the main stage area. “I don’t mind being here early, I just want to play with my friends and watch the games,” one waiting guest says. It’s abundantly clear: this crowd craves Hearthstone action. Before the much-anticipated semifinals and grand final, visitors entertained themselves playing in side tournaments. The hall buzzed as decks were eliminated, apparel was won, and jokes were cracked. Over in the theater, video of previous days’ matches rolled, ensuring the audience was fully prepared for the final day. When the main stage area opened its doors, the crowd rushed forward to obtain the perfect spot to cheer from. Within minutes, the hall could barely contain anyone else, and the semifinals began. The audience rose up as Frank “Fr0zen” Zhang and Jason “JasonZhou” Zhou entered the arena, both determined to eliminate their opponent. With Fr0zen’s incredibly powerful Big Spell Mage banned, he opened with his Cube Warlock deck—which struggled against JasonZhou’s Tempo Rogue. As the Rogue kept piling on pressure, Fr0zen ran out of removal options, and JasonZhou took the lead. Unfazed by the early loss, Fr0zen managed to bring the series to a fifth game. Once more, his Cube Warlock deck had to face an aggressive deck— the Aggro Druid JasonZhou had brought. With both players focused and the audience watching breathlessly, Fr0zen dropped to just 2 Health. JasonZhou desperately tried to find the remaining damage using Living Mana, but Fr0zen’s removal sealed the deal, and he advanced to the grand final. A clash of the East followed in the second semifinal between Jung-Soo “Surrender” Kim and Chen “tom60229” Wei Lin. Surrender initiated the offense with his Tempo Rogue, whilst tom60229 tried to fend off the incoming damage using his Jade Druid. The Druid’s mana acceleration granted tom60229 access to much needed answers soon enough. The match ended with a tense faceoff between Surrender’s Highlander Priest and tom60229’s Tempo Rogue. Two applications of Prince Keleseth’s Battlecry effect had Surrender on his back foot the entire game, but—utilizing all the tools at his disposal—he tried his best to clear the board and stabilize the game. It proved insufficient, and tom60229 chipped away Surrender’s last remaining health. With a clash of epic proportion looming, the audience was split on who would take it all. “I love the Big Spell Mage Fr0zen brought,” one guest explains. “When all the decks for the HCT World Championship were released I tried all of them, and Fr0zen’s decks worked best for me. I think he takes it!” It was not too hard to find tom60229 supporters either, though. A couple of German fans held up signs reading, “Tom is the bomb” and, “60229% faith!”. When asked what made them fans of tom60229, one responded: “We love his timidity, and he’s been playing for so long already. He deserves it.” Explosive applause welcoming the finalists sent trembles across the building. Fr0zen and tom60229 sat down, put on their headphones, and entered the final battle. Right off the bat, the finalists had the audience on the edge of their seats. Fr0zen’s Big Spell Mage took on tom60229’s Jade Druid, but as the Jade Golems grew larger, Fr0zen ran out of removal options—the situation becoming increasingly dire with every turn. Using a timely Skulking Geist, Fr0zen deleted most of tom60229’s deck, stabilizing and forcing tom60229 to concede. The opening game signaled how close the rest of the series would be. As befitting a clash between two Hearthstone players of such caliber, a fifth game between Fr0zen’s Jade Druid and tom60229’s slightly different Jade Druid would decide it all. The key moment occurred before even a single card was played, and surprised casters and visitors alike—tom60229 kept Ultimate Infestation in his opening hand, hoping to play it before Fr0zen did. The gamble paid off, and—with a lead on the board, in hand, and in Health—tom60229 watched as Fr0zen conceded the game, and tom60229 was crowned Hearthstone World Champion! After receiving a standing ovation from the crowd and holding his trophy high, the first world champion hailing from the Asia-Pacific region reflected on the final match. “I didn’t feel in top shape today, but I couldn’t feel better now,” tom60229 said, glowing with pride. “When I was down 0-2, I thought it was over. But when I managed to bring it back to a fifth game, I had regained full confidence.” As the day ended, fans lined up to take a picture with their new hero. Four days of outstanding Hearthstone play, witnessed from all over the world, marked the end of HCT for 2017. Congratulations once again to tom60229! Thanks for joining us for four incredible days of some of the best Hearthstone of all time. What were your favorite moments from the event? Let us know in the comments.

Knockouts and Clever Plays Mark HCT World Championship Day 3

When the Beurs van Berlage opened early Saturday morning, enthusiastic visitors rushed to get front-row seats. Amongst them were two friends of Jon “Orange” Westberg, who kicked off the day against Chen “tom60229” Wei Lin. “Jon’s easily winning this. He’ll make it to the semifinals today,” one of Orange’s friends said. Despite the support Orange received, tom60229 eliminated him and moved on to the quarterfinals. Jason “JasonZhou” Zhou and Muzahidul “Muzzy” Islam raced toward the finish line next. A tense match between Control Warlock and Dragon Highlander Priest had JasonZhou’s Dirty Rat pulling Prophet Velen out of Muzzy’s hand. Though Muzzy pushed a lot of damage, JasonZhou stabilized a few turns later—and would make it to the playoffs without dropping a game. The audience—wide awake from the competition’s speed—had no time to regain their breath. Group C’s final match featured Ryan “Purple” Murphy-Root and Alexei “ShtanUdachi” Barsukov, and they didn’t let fans wait long for a result. ShtanUdachi’s lineup crushed Purple’s, making him the second European in the quarterfinals. When asked if he felt any pressure being one of the two European representatives in the playoffs, ShtanUdachi said: “Europe had six people at the HCT World Championship, so it’s still strong. To me, the pressure is the same as ever—I just want to make the people who root for me proud.” Rounding out the group stage were Zheng “OmegaZero” Lin and Frank “Fr0zen” Zhang. In an iconic game, OmegaZero picked Eye for an Eye against Fr0zen’s Big Spell Mage, preventing a low-health Fr0zen from damaging OmegaZero. The clash went the distance, but Fr0zen came out on top. The quarterfinals took off immediately, as Canadian Julien “DocPwn” Bachand took on JasonZhou. Showing no signs of slowing down since, JasonZhou navigated his line-up past DocPwn’s. The audience applauded an exhausted but thrilled JasonZhou—the very first Hearthstone player to make it to two HCT World Championship semifinals. The battle of Taiwan followed, with tom60229 facing off against Samuel “SamuelTsao” Tsao. A mirror between both players’ Tempo Rogue decks determined the outcome of the series, and after a long fight for the board tom60229 dealt the fatal blow. Pondering on the match, tom60229 later stated: “Of course I’m sad that I had to battle another Taiwanese player. On the other hand, it guaranteed one of us would be in the semifinals! No matter what the outcome would be, I just hoped for that person to make it far in the tournament.” Though all matches had their unique twists, the third quarterfinal was the most memorable match of the day. In game five between Fr0zen and Thomas “Sintolol” Zimmer—Fr0zen’s Big Spell Mage against Sintolol’s Dragon Combo Priest—Sintolol created large minion after large minion, only to find them getting annihilated by Fr0zen’s removal. When there appeared to be absolutely no way out, Sintolol obtained a copy of Fr0zen’s Frost Lich Jaina, completely changing the strategy. The crowd roared when Fr0zen found his way to victory. Exhilarated, Fr0zen sighed all of his stress away: “We both had no idea what we’re doing. This match up wasn’t practiced much, let alone this crazy situation!” The final ticket to the semifinals was up for grabs for ShtanUdachi and Jung-Soo “Surrender” Kim. Perhaps fatigued from his earlier match, ShtanUdachi struggled with his Jade Druid. Knowing the ins and outs of Highlander Priest, Surrender burst his opponent down—and vowed to make his supporters even prouder on the final day. With the top four players locked in for the semifinals, all that remains is the crowning of a new World Champion on Sunday. If the past days are any indication, it will be epic, so make sure you catch all the action!

The Bar Is Raised on Day 2 of the HCT World Championship

0 komentar

After an explosive start to the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) World Championship, groups A and B had a day of rest on Friday. In a far less stormy Amsterdam, it was now up to groups C and D not only to enthrall the crowd, but also to fight for a spot in the playoffs. The bar was set high immediately, as Anthony “Ant” Trevino and Alexey “ShtanUdachi” Barsukov opened the day. Though the first game went in ShtanUdachi’s favour, Ant’s teammate on Spacestation Gaming, Devin “DrJikininki” Garthright, had faith in his friend: “Don’t worry, he’ll definitely make it through,” he said. “You’ve got to give your opponents some kind of hope, right?” The crowd roared as Ant played Prince Keleseth three times in one turn, but ShtanUdachi navigated the match expertly, and ultimately was crowned the victor. Group C’s second match featured Ryan “Purple” Murphy-Root and Thomas “Sintolol” Zimmer. Cleverly using a copy of Sintolol’s Inner Fire, Purple denied his opponent’s Dragon Combo Priest an opportunity to burst him down with a buffed Twilight Drake. Though initially distraught, Sintolol formulated a new plan—and a few turns later a 44/44 Kabal Talonpriest trampled Purple’s strategy. Not letting the initial defeat keep him down, Purple rose to the occasion against Ant in the elimination match. The Canadian wrought havoc on Ant’s aggressive line-up, removing the early pressure efficiently whilst slowly turning defense into offense. A burst of passion erupted from the crowd as fans who had traveled from France to see Purple play celebrated the flawless victory. But Group C’s most jaw-dropping turn occurred during the match between ShtanUdachi and Sintolol. Facing ShtanUdachi’s ever-growing Jade Druid deck, Sintolol was desperately looking for his Priest’s combo pieces. Using his Twilight Acolyte and Potion of Madness, he took over the Druid’s Fandral Staghelm, allowing him to activate both effects from a Nourish obtained earlier. When asked if he had thought of the play when he obtained the Nourish many turns prior, Sintolol responded in the negative: “I just picked Nourish earlier because I needed draw,” he said. “When I saw the opportunity to take Fandral too, I knew I had to.” Over in group D, the calm Chinese veteran Zheng “OmegaZero” Lin took on a nervous looking Jung-Soo “Surrender” Kim, whose nerves were shared with a breathless audience in a nail-biting game between OmegaZero’s Aggro Druid and Surrender’s Cube Warlock. Breathing a huge sigh of relief, Surrender shook off his nerves at the end of the series, as he locked down the first win in his group. Following the clash of Eastern players, two Westerners—Yevgeniy “Neirea” Shumilin and Frank “Fr0zen” Zhang—sat down for their test of strength. Both players took near maximum time per turn to decide their lines of play, slowly revealing that Fr0zen’s decks and strategies outmatched Neirea’s. Neirea’s Tempo Rogue deck rained down massive damage, but Fr0zen turned the game in his favor in just two turns. By the time the elimination match against OmegaZero came around, Neirea had regained his fighting spirit, and a tug-of-war ensued in the opening Highlander Priest mirror match. OmegaZero went through his entire deck, but to no avail. Brushing away the initial game loss, he went on to eliminate Neirea from the tournament. The most exciting series of group D was Fr0zen vs. Surrender, and it had the audience on the edges of their seats. Fr0zen lead with his Jade Druid against Surrender’s Highlander Priest. Recognizing the Druid would gain too much armor if the game dragged on, Surrender went all-in. A Forbidden Shaping summoned Deathwing on Surrender’s side, eventually clearing the path to victory. With a huge weight off his shoulders, Surrender thought long about the opponents he could face in the playoffs: “I think my line-up works best against ShtanUdachi, so I would love to face him,” he reasoned. “I’m scared of Sintolol though, since he runs the Big Spell Mage—which against Fr0zen was problematic for me.” As the second day wrapped up, an energetic crowd left longing for more action. A group of four Dutch enthusiasts described their experience: “It adds a new level of gameplay experience when you face your opponent directly,” one of them said. “Everyone is just so friendly here, and meeting people from all over the world with the same passion is indescribable. We all cheer together.” With two of the four days already in the books, the road to crowning a new Hearthstone World Champion continues Saturday. Be sure to tune in as all four groups identify their second playoff competitor, followed by the quarterfinals!

Inside the Explosive First Day of the HCT World Championship

0 komentar

The city of Amsterdam is always buzzing. Citizens travel to their jobs, students to their schools, and tourists to the many picturesque places in the Netherlands’ capital. This morning, however, there was something extra: palpable tension. A storm was brewing, and not the one raging outside on this windy day. Hearthstone Esports’ crown event of the competitive year, the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) World Championship, opened in spectacular fashion. All year long, the world’s most seasoned Hearthstone players have fought for a shot at the coveted title of World Champion and the lion’s share of the $1,000,000 prize pool. Early in the morning, a crowd unfazed by the weather queued up in front of the Beurs van Berlage. Hearthstone fans from all over the world didn’t mind the wind and rain. Once inside, they were greeted with the announcement of the second Hearthstone Global Games (HGG), which was received with enthusiasm. The crowd’s patience was rewarded further when the Hearthstone World Championships started, as Group A opened with a close match between Spring Champion Frederik “Hoej” Nielsen and Julien “DocPwn” Bachand, who qualified through the Winter Championships. In a tense deciding fifth game, DocPwn trampled Hoej’s Highlander Priest, flooding the board with minions buffed by Prince Keleseth. The second match of Group A between Jon “Orange” Westberg and Chen “tom60229” Wei Lin was equally thrilling, featuring a Highlander Priest game between the two that oscillated back and forth. In the end, it was tom60229 who came out on top, winning the match 3-1. The mostly European crowd seemed uneasy—both European players in group A were already in the lower bracket. As Orange and Hoej took the stage, unease gave way to excitement for this epic clash. Hoej fought valiantly, but the match was a one-sided 3-0, and Alliance’s Orange took a convincing, hard-fought victory. The winner’s match was a tighter race. The first two games went in DocPwn’s favour—his Jade Druid and Highlander Priest both stabilized before tom60229’s Tempo Rogue could finish him off. Looking desperately for a win to lift his spirits again, the Flash Wolves’ star swapped to his Jade Druid. When all hope seemed lost, the Lich King handed DocPwn a golden ticket to the playoffs: Army of the Dead refilled his board, preventing tom60229 from setting up lethal. Reflecting on the game, a proud but down-to-earth DocPwn noted, “I don’t think there was any other card that would’ve saved me there. Army of the Dead was the best one by far.” Group B opened with one of Americas’ finest, Muzahidul “Muzzy” Islam, against China’s Jason “JasonZhou” Zhou. In the most nail-biting moment of the day, Muzzy found his way to victory after being brought to just 6 Health. JasonZhou did what he could in subsequent games, but ultimately fell 1-3. Muzzy’s friend and former teammate, Keaton “Chakki” Gill—who came from the USA to support Muzzy—wasn’t surprised about the result. “He’s just the best,” Chakki said with confidence. The second match in Group B between Aleksandr “Kolento” Malsh and Samuel “SamuelTsao” Tsao was a very different experience. Whereas between Muzzy and JasonZhou the first game was tense and the later matches played out as expected, Kolento and SamuelTsao built up to an exceptional finale. In the fifth and final game, Kolento only had Jade Druid left. Staring him in the face was SamuelTsao’s Highlander Priest. Kolento built up as much armour as possible to survive the burst damage from Highlander Priest, perhaps startling SamuelTsao, who took too long to finish a turn. In the end, however, he recovered and brought his Ukranian opponent down all the way from 44 health. In the elimination match, Kolento and JasonZhou—among the greatest players of their respective nations—danced around each other. A Tempo Rogue mirror decided who would be sent packing. Kolento opened aggressively, but a large Edwin VanCleef swung it back to JasonZhou. Kolento grasped for counter pressure, but found nothing—and JasonZhou delivered the final blow. In the Group B winner’s match, Muzzy was left with his Dragon Highlander Priest and SamuelTsao had his Zoolock. A long day of playing Hearthstone caused Muzzy to use his removal cards suboptimally, and SamuelTsao seized the opportunity. One stroke of burst damage gave him an insurmountable lead, and a spot in the playoffs. After a long day of close calls, the crowd left—but longing for more action in the days to come. “We came all the way from Ukraine to support Kolento, since he’s from our home town,” one of the attendees explains. His wife chimed in, saying: “I started playing Hearthstone and learned a lot from Kolento. Then I made [my husband] play it too!” Proudly, she points towards a sealed t-shirt. “I won this in a tournament here at the venue in a side event! I’m way better than my husband,” she adds teasingly. Though sad that their idol had been eliminated, they look forward to the rest of the event. “Everybody loses, that can happen. He’s still our hero!” Be sure to tune in again tomorrow, and let us know what you thought of the first day of competition in the comments!

Off-Meta Spotlight

To find these decks, we scoured the rankings for players that did well last week, and picked out some interesting builds from amongst these top performers. We only selected decks that were played in 50 or more games at Legend level. First up we have Stancifka, running a very creative Quest Mage deck. Stancifka's deck went through many iterations; however, this version (with an impressive 73% win rate!) seemed to serve him best. Next up is a deck that created a lot of buzz around the release of Kobolds and Catacombs: Minionless Hunter. On the China server, 小青藤 piloted this deck to a 65% win rate. Lastly, we have a unique take on the idea of Shaman evolution. Jambre's Arcane Giants/Unstable Evolution deck went through 15 different revisions during its run, but he achieved a 68% win rate with this version. Each of these players showed great skill and put up impressive numbers with some awesome deck choices. Congrats to each of these players! What are some of the craziest decks you’ve seen or played on the ladder lately? Let us know on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comments below! Good luck on your climbs everyone!

Dig into All 16 Players' Deck Lists for the HCT World Championship

0 komentar

As the Year of the Mammoth lumbers off into the sunset, it’s time to find out who will hoist the trophy at the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) World Championship in Amsterdam. Alongside the Choose Your Champion promotion, we’re excited to share all 16 players’ highly optimized deck lists, and a little bit of a sneak peek at what’s in store for the tournament next week. The HCT World Championship will be played in Conquest format, best-of-five matches, requiring each player to ban a single class out of their opponent’s line-up—so every player has four decks coming in, and plays three per match. Here’s everything you need to know about the field of play for the biggest competitive Hearthstone event of the year. Tournament Meta Seven classes will see play in Amsterdam, with Shaman and Warrior not making the cut for any of the world’s top competitors in this event. In total, 13 different archetypes span the seven classes, but the core of the tournament will focus primarily on four classes: Priest, Druid, Warlock, and Rogue. In the post-Kobolds & Catacombs era, pro play has been heavily influenced by the presence of “Cube” Warlock—a deck focused on utilizing the all-new Carnivorous Cube to either aggressively populate the board with Doomguards, or hunker down behind a wall of Voidlords. The versatility of the deck and its ability to survive against a wide variety of both fast and slow decks has kept HCT Summer’s preeminent choice present: Priest is the class best positioned to counter the various Control and Cube Warlocks. Cube Warlock in a nutshell. Warlock and Priest will be met in battle by the ever-reliable Tempo Rogue, which is the most-played single archetype in the field (but only because there are two distinct flavors—standard and Dragon—of Highlander Priest). While it struggles against the major stabilization that Control Warlock is capable of, Tempo Rogue’s explosive opening potential continues to make it a very viable choice. Rounding out the bulk of players’ rosters is their Druid of choice: Aggro or Jade. (The most-played single line-up of Aggro Druid, Highlander Priest, Tempo Rogue, and Control Warlock will be fielded by three players.) Regional Diversity Here’s an at-a-glance look at how the class selections break down by the regions players hail from: Unique Decks For those of you looking for the off-meta selections, you have Jon “Orange” Westberg to thank for the tournament’s biggest surprise: a single Aggro Hunter. With the potential to open aggressively enough to beat most anything and the reach to ignore the Great Wall of Voidlords from Warlock, it’s an interesting strategic direction—and in the absence of much Paladin, it could just work. Mage and Paladin are the other underrepresented classes, with two players looking to Control Mage to defeat aggro line-ups and three players banking on Murloc Paladin to be their silver bullet against Priest. Within the common classes, there are also outliers: a lone Big Spell Priest from Anthony “Ant” Trevino or the only Dragon Combo Priest from Thomas “Sintolol” Zimmer stand apart, as does the one Zoo deck in Samuel “SamuelTsao” Tsao’s choices. Ban Strategies From what we know, players arrived at their lineups working from two very important assumptions: that both Priest and Warlock would feature heavily in the tournament overall. With 16 players packing Priest and 15 wielding Warlock, that turns out to have been a pretty good prediction! Working from that knowledge, a conservative line of strategy is to ban one of these two must-bring decks, and then position your remaining decks to have the strongest possible matchups against what you believe will fill those remaining two slots. Multiple decks running anti-aggro tools (Golakka Crawler, etc.) suggests that players expected aggressive Druid, Paladin, or Rogue lists, and have focused on improving those matchups at the expense of targeting the difficult-to-isolate Priest or Warlock. Most competitors will ban whichever of their opponent’s Priest or Warlock list is most difficult to beat, with the majority likely erring towards Priest. Those with the tools to contest Raza and Shadowreaper Anduin more efficiently—using decks like Jade Druid—will be the few to forgo playing against Gul’dan. Tech Cards Broadly speaking, there are fewer edge-case tech cards in play here, as players are laser-focused on bringing heavily refined decks and playing with the full suite of cards available for this Standard rotation. There are a few unsurprising tech cards making appearances, like Rin, the First Disciple in several Control Warlock decks. But occasional interesting inclusions do exist: Sonya Shadowdancer made it into Jason “JasonZhou” Zhou and Muzahidul “Muzzy” Islam’s Tempo Rogues, for example. Additionally, Frank “Fr0zen” Zhang has elected to contest the board with Violet Teachers and Mark of the Lotus in his Jade Druid. There are more minor variances, such as the inclusion or exclusion of Spiritsinger Umbra in Cube Warlock or the choice between Lyra the Sunshard or Gadgetzan Auctioneer in Highlander Priest, but those don’t stand out quite as much. The unique decks featured above also do feature some surprise card choices. SamuelTsao’s Zoo forgoes the expected Keleseth strategy to tech anti-Pirate Golakka Crawlers and additional Demon synergy with Vulgar Homonculus, Demonfire, and Bloodfury Potion. And Orange has a lone value-oriented Flanking Strike in his otherwise extraordinarily aggressive Hunter deck. The stakes are incredibly high for these 16 players, and these are the deck lists they’ve chosen to battle with for the title of World Champion—and the $1,000,000 grand prize. Peruse every deck list below, then grab your favorites to play for yourself! Whose decks do you trust to win the day for Choose Your Champion? Are there any decks here that surprised you? Choose Your Champion Root for your favorite player as they compete in the HCT World Championship! Pick from one of the 16 competitors and earn Hearthstone card packs based on how well your player performs. These champions have come from across the world to compete for the ultimate glory this year. Find out who’s playing who in the groups via the button below. Champion Groups You can also click on the dropdown buttons to learn more about individual players! China Jason "JasonZhou" Zhou is one of China’s top players, having won the 2017 Super Premier Spring and 2016 Super Premier Summer tournaments. He also made it to the top four at the 2016 Hearthstone World Championship and recently competed at the 2017 Spring Championship. He’s one of China’s two hopes at claiming the World Champion title this year. The 21-year-old’s qualification via Last Call for the HCT World Championship marks the fourth time he will represent the country at a global Hearthstone championship. Zheng "OmegaZero" Lin has always had an interest in card games, and had competed vigorously in local events in order to earn the points he needed. Europe Aleksei "ShtanUdachi" Barsukov emerged as the undefeated champion in the HCT Winter Championship! It was no easy feat for the Russian player, who had to maneuver his way through two seven-game series to take home the title. ShtanUdachi is one of the Hearthstone scene's most experienced, talented and creative pros. The HCT Winter Championship was one of his first major in-person events, making his dominance even more impressive. Frederik "Hoej" Høj Nielsen took the title of 2017 HCT Spring champion with an impressive 5-1 for the whole tournament. When it comes to his performance, Hoej’s career says no different: he had an amazing year in 2015, that featured 2 major tournament wins and multiple top 8 finishes. When not competing, Hoej is often found streaming in the company of his pet parrot, Pidgey. His early playstyle was mostly mid-range oriented, but the Year of the Kraken solidified him as one of the best Renolock players. In Year of the Mammoth he can easily pilot any lineup. Learn more about Hoej in his profile video here. Representing Cloud9, Oleksandr "Kolento" Malsh is one of the most decorated Hearthstone players of all time having six major tournament wins under his belt. He visibly stepped away from the open competitive scene in 2016, but with his pro Gold Series win in China and simultaneous rank 1 Legend on both EU and NA he is now stronger than ever. He practices alone and innovates frequently. Back to back 2017 Europe Playoffs Top 4 means that Team Liquid Yevhenii "Neirea" Shumilin is an expert in swiss format regardless of the metagame. Neirea is no stranger to top 8 finishes, however he is still looking for that one big tournament win and the HCT World Championship might be his big break. Jon "Orange" Westburg's achievements in competitive Hearthstone have rung in our ears for years. Orange quickly made 2017 his year, starting with a WESG second place finish and qualifying for the HCT Summer Championship thanks to his win at DreamHack Summer. Representing Alliance, Orange started playing Hearthstone during beta, and remains one of the competitive scene’s top performers to this day. Also, his hair – right? Hailing from Bad Vilbel, Germany, this full-time Hearthstone player wanted to prove that he was the best point-earner in Europe—and as a result, qualified for the HCT World Championship via Last Call. Thomas "Sintolol" Zimmer is well known for playing a ton of ladder and open cups, and considers pizza margherita and a loaded salad as his favorite pick-me-up. Asia-Pacific A life-long gamer, Chen "tom60229" Wei-Lin got his start on card games in seventh grade. He also spent a lot of time on Warcraft III and World of Warcraft before moving into Hearthstone. As one of Taiwan’s top players, he has had multiple Championship showings and tournament wins, and describes himself as a master of card games. tom60229 narrowly missed out on qualifying for the HCT World Championship at the HCT Summer Championship—losing to Purple—but redemption (in the form of a spot at the World Championship) has come. Winner of the HCT Summer Championship, Kim "Surrender" Jung Soowill join Planet Odd teammate Hoej at the World Championship! Through Hearthstone, Surrender has received many opportunities and experiences that would otherwise not have been available to him. He’s travelled overseas 10 times for tournaments, experienced different cultures, and bought his mother a car with his prize money—and he’s only 20! Learn more about Surrender in his profile video here. The HCT Winter Championship was no easy feat for Taiwan’s Samuel "SamuelTsao" Tsao. SamuelTsao had to fight the hardest for his spot in the playoffs, playing the maximum of 21 games in his three matches. He also ended the tournament just shy of a spot in the World Championship. Nevertheless, SamuelTsao is a community favorite for his calm demeanor during matches and can-do attitude. Americas Frank "Fr0zen" Zhang is considered a top prospect in the North American Hearthstone scene. He was 2nd place in the 2017 HCT Winter Championship and DreamHack Summer 2016. Fr0zen was drawn to Hearthstone by first watching streams of other pros, and now he’s playing among the best and brightest minds in the scene. He’s been playing Hearthstone since early beta. Julien "DocPwn" Bachand-Fleurent had a quick rise to success as a relatively unknown name in competitive Hearthstone. In one of the most enthralling series, DocPwn took down reigning world champion Pavel at the HCT Winter Championship. It was an unexpected victory for a player who had only ever treated Hearthstone as a part-time gig—DocPwn’s current job is social work, where he helps empower the youth of his local community. Though he’s reached the game’s highest stage, DocPwn’s still not sure if he will pursue Hearthstone full time. Perhaps the HCT World Championship could change things. Learn more about DocPwn ins his profile video here. Anthony "Ant" Trevino was part of the original wave of competitive Hearthstone Players to rise in 2014. Competing at the 2014 Hearthstone Americas Championship, Ant was one of the top 16 players in the region. Prior to the Spring Playoffs, his only other HCT accomplishment was DreamHack Austin 2016 where he placed 5th-8th. Ant has quickly become America’s sweetheart with his unyielding positive mindset – he takes every competition one game at a time. Learn more about Ant's journey in Hearthstone, then find out about his road to the HCT World Championship! Despite his decorated competitive career, Ryan "Purple" Murphy-Root doesn’t even think of himself as a pro gamer. He played StarCraft: Brood War as a teenager and then took a 10-year video game hiatus before he took up Hearthstone. Purple’s biggest motivation to play Hearthstone is his Twitch community, though he says it’s his girlfriend who is his biggest fan. The couple first met at BlizzCon in 2015—the same BlizzCon he first qualified to play at—and she now helps him prepare for tournaments. Muzahidul "Muzzy" Islam competed in the HCT Spring Championship in Shanghai, but had his dreams dashed by Neirea. A game and simulation development student living in Pennsylvania, Muzzy is regarded by the pro Hearthstone circuit as one of the smartest and most helpful players around. There’s no questioning his competitive prowess as North America’s top point earner. Modest and focused, with his eyes on the prize, Muzzy’s recent wins at various DreamHacks cemented his place at the HCT World Championship. Then, click the button below to choose a champion to cheer for. Remember to choose carefully. You cannot change your selection once you have chosen! Vote Now You will receive one Kobolds & Catacombs card pack just for participating. You will get one additional card pack each time your champion wins a best-of-five match. If your champion of choice plays in the finals, you can earn up to six total packs (including your participation pack). All card packs will be delivered to you in-game the week after the World Championship. Voting ends on January 16, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Casters Returning to the casting table for the HCT World Championship are: Brian Kibler and Dan "Frodan" Chou Simon "Sottle" Welch and Alexander "Raven" Baguley TJ Sanders and Nathan "Admirable" Zamora Format The World Championship will have a dual tournament group stage, followed by a single elimination playoff bracket. The top two players from each group will advance to the playoff bracket. Each group will consist of four competitors—one from each of the Seasonal Championships plus Last Call—and have been seeded based on the players results from those Seasonal Championships plus their Hearthstone Competitive Points. Each match will be best-of-five in Conquest format with one class ban, so all players will need four decks. Schedule The HCT World Championship will take place from Thursday, Jan. 18 through Sunday, Jan. 21. The schedule for World Championship is: Jan. 18 at 8:30 a.m. CET – Group Stage Jan. 19 at 8.30 a.m. CET – Group Stage Jan. 20 at 8.30 a.m. CET – Elimination Stage Jan. 21 at 4.00 p.m. CET – Playoffs Prize Pool A cool $1,000,000 is at stake this World Championship, and will be distributed as follows: Placement Prize (USD) 1st $250,000 2nd $150,000 3rd & 4th $100,000 5th – 8th $50,000 9th – 16th $25,000 Total $1,000,000 Watch Live Don’t miss the final, star-studded conclusion to the Year of the Mammoth!
