Tales of the Talent: HCT Time with Raven

2017 was a mammoth year for Alexander “Raven” Baguley as he circled the globe with the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) alongside his commentating compatriots (in case you missed them, we spoke to Nathan “ThatsAdmirable” Zamora and Simon “Sottle” Welch earlier this month!). With the competitive year coming to a close and the HCT World Championship in Amsterdam around the corner, Raven leveled with us on what stood out this year, as well as who he’s rooting for to win the title of World Champion. The memorable moments in 2017 were plentiful, but two specific circumstances stood apart for Raven: Being in the Bahamas, and the Summer Championship grand final. “The Winter Championship, just because of where it was,” Raven says, adding, “We saw some great players perform very well. It was crazy to go to the Bahamas—that was nuts, for me.” On the subject of summer, Raven got to enjoy just being a part of the crowd. “I got to sit and watch as a spectator,” he says. “It was insane, and Surrender winning was amazing. The whole audience was going nuts every single turn. Being able to watch at the Blizzard Arena was kind of awesome.” Akin to the other half of his dynamic duo, Sottle, Raven is elated to see the new HCT 2018 rules unveiled. “I’m really excited to see what happens with the development of the regions,” he explains. He thinks that the relative strength of the regions will shift going into 2018, and is not alone in his hopes that there will be some shakeups in the year to come. There is still an entire HCT World Championship between us and the start of the 2018 campaign, however, and Raven lit up discussing it. “I just can’t wait to see who becomes the World Champion,” he says. “We have the most insane tournament line-up that we’ve seen in any tournament, never mind just HCT. The line-up we’ve got is mind-blowing.” The field of players headed to Amsterdam is pretty much a who’s-who of the best Hearthstone players around right now, it’s true—but who does Raven think will set themselves apart? “I’ve got two favorites for this tournament,” he says, although he does add that it’s hard to choose from such a stacked selection of competitors. “I’ve enjoyed watching Neirea play, but I’m really looking forward to seeing Surrender play. He’s the most recent championship winner—but also, as a Korean player, with the Korean scene having gone very up and down, we haven’t seen consistent, high-level Korean performances. I’m expecting big things from him.” If there’s a surprise dark horse for Raven, it’s Anthony “Ant” Trevino. “I think Ant might surprise people,” Raven says. “He’s a fantastic Hearthstone player, but his skill and performance can be overshadowed by his personality. I think that sometimes people forget that he’s really good at the game.” When we get to discussing the actual venue for the HCT World Championship, Raven can't wait to welcome HCT 2017 to Europe. “I’ve been to Amsterdam before, for a holiday. I had a lot of fun there. The location is great—right in the city, tons of stuff to do. Having an event in a central location in Europe is great for so many European fans.” In closing, Raven’s personal thoughts are a blend of humility and the same pure excitement he has radiated throughout the conversation. “I think, for me, the World Championship is such a big deal because I’m still relatively new to casting,” he says. “For Hearthstone to develop as much as it has in the past few years and build up to this event—having [the World Championship] at its own event, separate from BlizzCon, is amazing. I never thought I’d attend an event like this, much less cast it. It’s pretty much a dream come true.” Another dream will no doubt come true for one of the 16 players spending their upcoming holidays furiously practicing for the HCT World Championship! Tales of the Talent: Sottle’s HCT Takes

It’s been a non-stop year for Simon “Sottle” Welch as an esports commentator—but three Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) seasonal championships and a defeated Dothraki haircut later, he’s still excited for what lies ahead. Here are Sottle’s highlights from 2017 and predictions for the upcoming HCT World Championship. The year in review for Sottle starts with the note that Nathan “ThatsAdmirable” Zamora ended on—not to sleep on ShtanUdachi. “ShtanUdachi is a player that I’ve been an enormous fan of for a very long time,” Sottle explains. “Seeing him play lightning fast and destroy everyone was really awesome. I genuinely think he’s like, top five in the world. He was criminally underexposed before that.” He also appreciated his time at the Blizzard Arena Los Angeles—less because of the historic significance of the venue, and more for the extraordinarily engaged audience. “Having a crowd turn out and be into the plays—cheering for tech-y Pyromancer clears. They were an in-the-know Hearthstone audience,” Sottle says, adding, “The standard of play overall at [the HCT Summer Championship] was the highest we’ve seen.” In light of the recent announcement of the HCT 2018 ruleset, Sottle also offers his reaction to some of the changes. “Achieving [Hearthstone Masters] status will afford people who have proven themselves to be the most hard-working opportunities to get rewarded. We’ll see more of RDU, who had heartbreaking moments over and over. That’s not really going to happen under the new system. Players will be rewarded for doing well consistently.” When we turned our eyes to the World Championship next month, Sottle leapt at the opportunity to advocate for ShtanUdachi again. “He’s gone quiet since the Winter Championship,” Sottle says—but quickly adds, “He just sits at home and wins games of Hearthstone. He’s number one, for me.” Outside of this rad bromance, Sottle thinks Europe as a whole is the region to beat, but for one challenger: “The one man who might stop Europe taking it is Muzzy. He proved it with his point standings, and I think he will do a lot of damage if he brings a strong [deck list] lineup.” Sottle’s advice to Hearthstone esports fans is to watch the Last Call finishers closely. “They may not be players you’re familiar with,” he says, noting their exceptional skill and consistent play. He also seems hopeful that China will shine, saying, “There’s only so many times [the Chinese qualified players] can’t back those results up. They’re clearly the best China has to offer. I’m hoping that China puts up a much better showing than they have recently.” Planning for Amsterdam, Sottle is personally excited to check off a bucket list item. “I’m excited about it,” he says, with just a hint more mirth than a Sottle fan might expect. “The Netherlands is a country I have never been to, which is kind of rare in Europe in particular. I’ve traveled basically throughout my entire career, and I’ve been to a vast majority of the mainland European Countries—but the Netherlands is not one of them! From what I’ve been told, it’s a beautiful place to visit.” As with ThatsAdmirable, Sottle will also be bringing his wife for this auspicious occasion. “She started coming along to yo-yo contests back in the day, originally very begrudgingly as the bored girlfriend,” Sottle explains. “Now, she’s involved in the international governing body.” Sounds like Sottle isn't the only one who yo-yo'd a little! Most adorable of all, Sottle sends a special thanks to his co-caster, Alex “Raven” Baguley. “We kinda came into this whole adventure together. We both came through So You Think You Can Cast at the same time. It means a ton to us that so many people enjoy what we do. I couldn’t have asked to do it with a better partner than Raven—he’s a good friend, and a great casting partner.” That’s it from Sottle! Get Ready for Hearthstone® Esports in 2018!

2018 is almost upon us, which means it’s time for a new year of the Hearthstone® Championship Tour! Here are the details about what’s changing for Hearthstone esports. This year was one of amazing growth for the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT). But there is still work to be done! We’re very excited to share some key changes we’re making for the coming year. Hearthstone Masters System The Hearthstone Masters System will recognize top players based on the consistency of their performance. There will be three tiers, with rewards for eligible players increasing at each level. The 1-, 2-, and 3-Star Master tiers offer tournament appearance bonuses, invitations to HCT Playoffs and online Blizzard-run tournaments with cash prizes, and special commemorative memorabilia. A player’s tier will be determined using the rolling sum of their point totals over the most recent three HCT seasons. Players must hit a point target to be granted or to maintain their status. Status levels are recalculated on the last day of each HCT season, so your tier benefits will last for four months. Hearthstone Championship Tour In 2018 we are streamlining the Hearthstone Championship Tour to create more earning potential for competitors, improve qualification systems for established pros and aspiring competitors, increase staffing and infrastructure support for Playoffs, and hold more global Tour Stops! Qualification Improvements Each HCT season will now have a point target, which will be announced before that season begins. All players who earn at least that many points will qualify to play in the seasonal Playoffs. Players can earn points from events in all regions, and then compete in Playoffs based on their country of residence. The target for Season 1 is 45 points for all regions, with targets for the following season announced two weeks before it starts. As we progress through the year, points targets may be scaled by region. The HCT Last Call qualifying player—based on a player’s total points earned for a year’s three HCT seasons—will now be known as the Regional Points Leader. The Regional Points Leader will still earn an invitation to the HCT World Championship, and top players in each region will receive cash prizes. Please also bid a warm welcome to the Hearthstone Challengers program, which will qualify eight players to Playoffs each season. This program will combine online cups and the existing Tavern Hero Qualifier to provide a more streamlined path to the Playoffs for aspiring players. Online cups will now be known as Challenger Cups, while the Tavern Hero Tournament will become the Challenger Finals. Tavern Hero Qualifiers will still exist as a pathway to the Challenger Finals. The Hearthstone Challengers program is only open to players who have not qualified for Playoffs for three consecutive HCT seasons. Hearthstone Competitive Points In 2018, we’ll be changing up the amount of Hearthstone Competitive Points (CP) awarded for ladder finishes and tournaments. Starting in January 2018, a player’s three best ladder finishes per HCT season will count towards their point total. We want to avoid players being disadvantaged when they compete at an event that occurs toward the end of a month, when everyone is trying to reach the highest possible ladder rank. HCT seasons in 2018 will be: Season 1 – January, February, March Season 2 – April, May, June, July Season 3 – August, September, October, November December 2017 is an offseason, and will not count toward point totals for competitive Hearthstone in 2018. Playoffs To maintain the accessible, distributed model for HCT Playoffs, we will be increasing on-site staffing and infrastructure support for Playoff venues to ensure everything runs smoothly. We will have fewer total Playoff venues per region, but that means that each venue will be built up for competitive play, with stable internet connections and a more controlled competitive environment. HCT Tour Stops We’re increasing the number of international tournaments in 2018 with HCT Tour Stops, which will put the “Tour” in the Hearthstone Championship Tour and travel across the globe! With increased Competitive Points, prizing, and the opportunities to experience new sights and cities, we hope to see you at an HCT Tour Stop next year. More information on the full Hearthstone Championship Tour program will be provided in the Official Rules, which will be available before the end of the year. Team Standings Teams and organizations are a vital component of Hearthstone’s esports ecosystem. Starting in Season 2 of 2018, we’ll be awarding cash incentives to players from the top 10 Hearthstone teams per HCT season. Teams will be able to choose three players to represent them, with the choices being set for a full HCT season. At the end of each season, the top 10 teams on our Pro Team Standings Leaderboard will receive a cash prize based on the combined seasonal point total of their three team members. Tales of the Talent: ThatsAdmirable on HCT 2017

Known for his razor-sharp wit and decidedly softer beard, Nathan "ThatsAdmirable" Zamora is one of the talented enthusiasts bringing competitive Hearthstone to life from behind the commentating desk. After an incredible year packed with high-level play, Admirable reflects on the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) in 2017, and offers up a few ideas for what to expect at the HCT World Championship in Amsterdam. We started out talking about the obvious—what the most memorable moments of the year were—and Admirable jumped on a recent memory: Jon "Orange" Westberg and Ryan "Purple" Murphy-Root hugging when they had both qualified for the World Championship. "It was the fact that they had succeeded in this common goal," Admirable says. "They put in the hard work and saw it pay off. You could see their friends celebrating around them." He says he personally follows the competitive scene because of how real those emotions are. With time to reflect ahead of the World Championship in January, Admirable spoke highly of this year's marquee events. Despite grueling days during the best-of-seven format—"DocPwn actually getting fatigued!"—the Winter Championship in the Bahamas featured prominently in his memories. The incomparable crowd in Shanghai stood out, too, especially their passion for Kolento over homegrown talent: "I knew Kolento was big in China, but I had no idea it was to that degree." Admirable loved the studio environment of the newly opened Blizzard Arena Los Angeles, where the Summer Championship was held, adding, "It almost foreshadows the way Amsterdam feels—that particular room in Burbank shares some 'historic' similarity." The reverence in his voice conveys a definite appreciation for how significant that milestone was in esports history. As for the Hearthstone World Championshp, he's quick to note that it's hard for him to single out any one favorite player. "A lot of these guys are close friends of mine, or I became friends with them over the course of HCT 2017," he says. If he has to pick, his heart says Purple, but his head says Muzahidul "Muzzy" Islam. "[Purple] is the player that stood out to me early on in my Hearthstone career. Every time he's in the scene, he's done magnificent things." On the flip side, Muzzy's success is undeniably impressive. "Muzzy is the hardest-working guy in the scene," Admirable says, adding, "His performance in terms of points this year speaks for itself. He was number one in points last year, too. That sort of feat is something I don't see being duplicated—it may never happen again." There are tons of other storylines that Admirable wants Hearthstone esports fans to remember. "If you want to look for technical play," he says, "Hoej and Muzzy are two players you can keep an eye on. For hand-reading, watch Surrender and Purple." He believes every Hearthstone fan will have something to watch for, even if it's just to see a fan favorite like Aleksandr "Kolento" Malsh compete. Asked if there are any players he thinks could surprise, he reaches back to the Bahamas and a player whose unorthodox pace could make a difference. "You may have forgotten [ShtanUdachi] won Bahamas, but he did it playing at a speed that was actually concerning to me. He's somebody who has a great mind for the game, and somebody you cannot sleep on. Do not underestimate ShtanUdachi." In terms of the trip to Amsterdam itself, Admirable shares a heartwarming revelation. "This is the first event I'll be working that my fiancée will be able to attend," he says. "We knew about this one far enough in advance that we were able to make plans, and might be able to spend some extra time in Europe. All the travel I do means I have to spend a lot of time away from her, so I'm looking forward to sharing this one with her." On that note, I ask Admirable about the one thing everyone should keep an eye on at the World Championship. Without missing a beat, he says: "If you watch one Hearthstone event this year, the World Championship is the one to watch. It's the strongest field we've ever had. There are underdogs, but there are too many people that could be considered a favorite to call someone a favorite. Attacks with Lifesteal will no longer create excessive animations while Auchenai Soulpriest and Bolf Ramshield are on the board. Multi-target effects with Lifesteal now apply their healing as a single large heal, rather than individually. All Lifesteal effects now use the same, standardized, visual and sound effects. Combo effects can no longer target non-interactable minions such as Sherazin, Seed. Brann Bronzebeard will no longer grant double Lifesteal to Corpsetaker. Blingtron’s Battlecry will now trigger weapon Deathrattles when it occurs twice due to Brann Bronzebeard. Minions destroyed by Frostmourne will now be displayed on its enchantment banner. Losing durability from Sword of Justice will no longer sometimes cause Lifesteal to trigger. Deathstalker Rexxar’s Battlecry no longer benefits from effects on an equipped weapon, such as Poisonous or Lifesteal. Unwilling Sacrifice’s random targeting will no longer select an enemy Spellbender that has intercepted an Unwilling Sacrifice. Granting a Deathrattle to Scavenging Hyena, then playing Terrorscale Stalker on it will no longer give it +2/+1. Resolved a crash that could occur when playing a Quest spell that triggers Counterspell. Cards transformed by Golden Kobold will no longer sometimes be revealed to your opponent. The animation for Frost Nova will no longer play multiples times while Moorabi is on the board. Hovering over a Quest in progress as your turn starts will no longer cause cards that provide progress toward completing it to lose class specific border colors. Replacing a Cursed Blade with a Cursed Blade will no longer remove the ‘cursed’ animation on the Hero portrait. Application of the Bolster buff will no longer be slightly delayed on an eligible minion that was played last onto a full board. Joust and other card reveal effects will now function correctly if your deck contains 60 cards. Tavern Brawl Shiftcon: Minions with a Yellow glow will no longer retain it when they shift into a new minion. Tag Team: Resolved an issue that could cause the match to end prematurely when swapping Heroes. Decks Assemble: Resolved a crash that could occur when the turn ends while your opponent controls Jeeves. Mobile [Mobile] Fixed a bug where card tooltips would sometime appear at the edge of the screen and get cut off on mobile devices [Android] Region selection on Android tablets will no longer sometimes be blank. * Make sure you’ve unlocked daily quests by completing The Duelist quest. It’s also recommended to make sure that there’s room in your quest log on release day so none of your quests are replaced!

Kobolds & Catacombs - Tale of the Fox Part 4

The Bard began by playfully plucking out a sea shanty on his lute. “Marin had, quite by accident, joined the crew of a mad kobold captain who intended to relieve an ancient and unusually angry dragon of its treasure.” He chuckled, and the music picked up in tempo. Every patron in the tavern felt their heart swell, and they stomped and clapped in time with the music. The Bard’s fingers danced on the strings, and he sang a song of flashing blades and swashbuckling heroics. “But while the avarice of the candle-covered captain spoke to Marin’s soul, his role for Marin in the caper was not to our hero’s fancy. The only answer? MUTINY!” Bait? Marin didn’t much like the sound of that. The time for playing the part of dutiful crew member was at an end. Quick as a scorpid’s sting, Marin grabbed the hilt of Candlebeard’s cutlass with one hand, then delivered a ringing right cross with the other as he pulled the blade from its scabbard. Candlebeard staggered, clutching his snout in pain and groping for a cutlass that was no longer there. Finding that he’d been disarmed, the kobold pirate tried to flee, but Marin was far too quick. He flipped deftly over the kobold’s head and intercepted him with the point of the blade. Candlebeard raised his paws in surrender “Well, I’ll be scuppered.” Marin swept his newfound blade into an elaborate duelist’s salute and addressed the “crew”. “Listen well, you piratical candle-heads! This is a mutiny!” “I’m in charge, now!” He leveled his blade at Candlebeard. “Throw this one in the brig!” The crew milled around anxiously, adapting slowly to the sudden change in leadership. “WELL? GET TO IT, YE BILGERATS!” Marin howled. The crew jumped and rushed to obey, bundling Candlebeard out of the room as he heaped an impressive array of curses on them. Marin grinned and began looting the room. He didn’t intend to stick around while his orders were carried out. His stint as a pirate only had to last long enough to snatch the map and whatever other loot he could find among Candlebeard’s belongings. Moments later, Marin left the pirate ship behind, new cutlass tucked into his belt, map in hand, and a glowing satchel he’d found hanging over his shoulder—something about it made him suspect it was larger on the inside than it was on the outside. He picked a direction, rolled up the map, and started moving. He stuffed the map in the satchel, but felt an obstruction. Odd—it appeared empty when he’d liberated it. Rifling inside, he gathered up a fistful of soft fabric and. . . his hand disappeared! An invisibility cloak! A delightful surprise, and an even greater treasure than the satchel! Gleefully, he swept the cloak around his shoulders, flipped up the hood, and faded from view. As he traveled and the terrain changed from natural caverns to finely worked white stone corridors, Marin reflected that the catacombs had a kind of geography to them, with perils to match. The troggs had established a kingdom here, a tangled lair of giant roots full of furbolgs grew there. Delve deep enough and you might even find a dragon. Speaking of which, after some twists, turns, and a few secret passages, he’d finally arrived at the glowing portal that should take him to his destination. Marin steeled himself and stepped into the light. His stomach did somersaults as he passed though the portal. He emerged in a realm of giants. . . . if the giants had picked up and moved on eons ago, but forgot to turn off the lights. Enormous white pillars lined a hall so large it could swallow a small castle with room to spare. Ornate geometric bas-reliefs crafted from an unfamiliar metal adorned the walls, and some of the elaborate stonework glowed mysteriously from within. There were alcoves, some containing figures that could be guardian statues, while others housed luminous figures that looked like constellations. Marin noted a tension in the air, like an approaching thunderstorm brewing, and the hairs on forearms stood up. He felt like a mouse creeping through an abandoned manor, hunted by an unseen cat. Marin shuddered. Given the choice, he always preferred to be the cat. It made sense that Vustrasz had made his lair in the former abode of Titans, though. This was one of the few places in the catacombs with space to spare for a venerable red dragon. The lair wasn’t far, according to the map. Marin just needed to climb a device that appeared to be an animated model of the celestial spheres, and clamber through a window. . . . The peaked window looked out over a vast chamber—even larger than the hall he’d just left—and Marin found himself dazzled by reflected, golden light. The chamber was piled high with gold coins, sparkling gems the size of his head, ornate arms, armor, and countless other precious treasures. Marin blinked, dazed both by greed and the lustrous beauty of it all. He picked up a necklace with an enormous ruby pendant, admiring the way the gem caught the light before putting it on. This was the very shining stuff every dungeon delver’s dreams were made of! He fought the impulse to take a running leap into a pile of coins. For one, he knew from experience that swimming in coins was rather painful. But also, Vustrasz the Ancient, known for his fiery breath and equally fiery temper, was slumbering peacefully on a pile of riches in the center of the chamber. Marin was also disappointed to note that Vustrasz was not the hoard’s sole occupant. King Togwaggle was overseeing a swarm of kobolds, who were quietly affixing ropes to a monolithic treasure chest. Rotten luck that the bloated little monarch had survived, let alone shown up to steal from the very same hoard Marin was trying to rob. And yet, the Kobold King’s presence might provide a useful distraction. . . . Enjoying the benefit of invisibility, Marin spoke confidently, “Hey Togwaggle. I found that treasure you were looking for.” Togwaggle gasped and peered about. Recognition blossomed on his face. “Stupid adventurer!” he hissed. “You is being too loud, be waking dragon and killing us all!” “Us? I doubt it. You and your lot? Seems likely!” Marin strolled closer to the dragon’s head and raised his voice to a shout. “Ancient Vustrasz! I am your humble and virtuous servant, Marin the Fox! Wake and heed my warning!” The huge dragon stirred, shifting on his bed of coins. The kobolds began desperately heaving at the ropes. Togwaggle wailed, “Human is crazy! Be getting treasure and be going, fools!” The dragon stirred, but did not awaken. Marin tried a different tack. He flipped the hood of the cloak back, rendering himself visible, and thumped on the dragon’s snout. “Hello? Vustrasz! Thieves! There are thieves in your treasure hoard!” The dragon’s great golden eye snapped open. Marin had heard that red dragons were wise, and among the least likely to roast humans on sight. Nonetheless, he was painfully aware of his proximity to a set of jaws that could snap him up in a single bite. The dragon’s huge pupil contracted and fixed on Marin, who smiled and pointed helpfully in the direction of the kobolds. The dragon heaved himself to his feet, sending gems and coins flying while Marin took cover. “Thieves! Wretched looters!” the dragon roared. “You will pay for your greed!” The kobolds scattered in terror. The dragon bounded to the chest, clasping it in his claws, and loosed a torrent of flame at the fleeing kobolds. “Yes, that will do nicely,” Marin thought. He hummed happily, to an accompaniment of shrieks, roars, and flame. He strolled the vast hoard, dropping choice pieces of loot into his satchel, which, it turned out, was in fact bigger on the inside! He was about to make his getaway when he spotted something that stole the breath from his lungs: the unmistakable form of Woecleaver, peeking out of a tall mound of gold coins! He couldn’t believe his luck! It wouldn’t take the dragon long to finish off the kobolds, but this was a risk work taking. He had to go for the axe! But hiking through a mountain of treasure is harder than you’d think. Mere steps before reaching his destination, Marin heard the whoosh of vast wings and an enormous red-scaled bulk filled his vision. Vustrasz had landed—right between him and the axe. “Thank you for your timely warning, little man,” the dragon’s voice boomed. He craned his great head down to look Marin in the eye. “You are unusually honorable for one of your kind. Why, you’ve barely stolen anything at all.” Marin stood dead still as a drop of sweat trickled down his brow. The dragon was toying with him. “Oh? What is this?” Vustrasz reached out and plucked the satchel from Marin’s shoulder. He dangled the bag between two huge claws with surprising delicacy and shook it. It jingled. The dragon cut a slit into it with the flick of a claw. They both watched an improbably long stream of coins, gems, and other treasures pour out of the bag. “I’ll just be going, then?” Marin squeaked. “I think you should.” the dragon rumbled, and began to take a deep breath. Marin flipped up his hood and popped out of sight, his disappearance catching Vustrasz by surprise. The dragon missed, and blasted the spot Marin had just occupied with a jet of flame. “Show yourself, wretched thief!” Marin did not show himself. Instead, as he ran, he snatched up a shield, tossed it face down onto the coins, and leapt on top of it. As if he were sledding on snow, he rode the shield down the sloping mound of treasure. The shield betrayed Marin’s location though, and he heard a deafening roar as Vustrasz let loose another great gout of dragonfire. With miraculous timing, Marin clutched the corners of his cape and spread it like a sail to catch the blast wave as it arrived. Even so, the force of it nearly knocked Marin off of his feet. He fought desperately to keep the shield beneath him as the wave of searing air propelled him ahead of the flames with incredible speed. With a combination of skill and luck, Marin guided his shield clear across the hoard and through an open doorway—one blessedly too small for the dragon. He shot out of the opening like a cork from a bottle, riding the skidding shield across the smooth stone floor. When his makeshift conveyance lost momentum, he leapt off and ran till he was out of breath. Then he ran some more. Then he crawled for a while, and hid. Once he was sure that the dragon wasn’t in pursuit, he allowed himself to stop and marvel at his luck. He was singed and largely loot-free, but still alive. After running up against a dragon? That was a good day. He hadn’t been entirely successful in his mission, but Marin consoled himself with the fact that this wasn’t the end of the adventure. Quite the contrary—it was just the beginning! Time to head back to the tavern to gather Oakheart and the rest of the guild. The kobolds, the catacombs, and that glorious, glorious treasure would be waiting. The Bard took a deep bow as the tavern erupted into hearty cheers. He basked in the appreciation, but soon enough, it was back to business as usual: card games resumed, drink orders were placed, and friendly laughter could be heard all around. Satisfied, the Bard packed his instrument in its worn leather case. It was good to see happy people, and he loved to spin a yarn here. The crowd was always warm and the brew was crisp and cold. Now to count the night’s take! He peered into the cauldron and, for the first time ever in his career as a troubadour, was struck speechless. He reached inside, and from among the gold, silver, and copper, retrieved a golden necklace with an enormous ruby pendant. His eyes darted over the bustling tavern crowd, but of course, there were no clues as to who left the jewel. The Bard began to chuckle. Then he laughed. He laughed long and loud.

December 2017 Ranked Play Season – Gear Up, Get Down!

The December Ranked Play Season is now live—and we’re unveiling a new card back you can add to your collection! Kobolds & Catacombs arrives this month, so it’s time to prove that you’re a bonafide dungeon delving dynamo! Gear up, get down, and grab all the treasure you can handle, then add the Catacomber card back to your collection by playing Hearthstone during the month of December. These card backs replace the art decorating the reverse side of your cards and are a great way to show off your Hearthstone accomplishments. Add the Consummate card back to your collection by hitting Rank 20 in either Standard or Wild Ranked Play modes. You’ll receive the Catacomber card back at the end of December’s Ranked Play Season in your Ranked Play reward chest. You earn Ranked Play reward chests based on your highest earned rank over the course of a Ranked Play season. Reward chests may contain seasonal card backs, Arcane Dust, and golden cards, and can be obtained by playing in either Standard or Wild Ranked Play modes. You’ll be awarded one chest per Ranked Play season based on your highest rank between the two modes. Don’t forget—the further you move up the Ranked Play ladder, the more bonus stars you’ll receive next season. In Ranked Play, you’ll receive bonus stars based on your performance from the previous season—one bonus star per rank you attained. Please note that even if bonus stars from the previous season get you directly to Rank 20 or above, you still have to log in at least once each Ranked Season to qualify for the card back reward. Gather your party, gear up, and get down into the catacombs during Hearthstone’s December Ranked Play season!

In this chapter of our What Sets the Pros Apart series, we look at the art of positioning in Hearthstone—how your placement of your minions on the board can be optimized for the most impactful plays. (For newer players, if you’re not already thinking about precisely where you play your minions on the board, you should be!) Positioning is a skill that is comprised of two considerations: What plays can I make that take advantage of how my minions are laid out, and what plays can my opponent make that can affect this? Classic examples of cards that require positional play include Flametongue Totem and Cone of Cold. When you are setting up a board for Flametongue Totem, you generally want to ensure that both adjacent minions can act on the turn that you play it, maximizing its immediate value. Playing it next to a minion with Taunt is valuable, as well, to improve your minion trades. You can even attack with minions adjacent to the Totem, then play Charge minions next to it for even more potential damage! Conversely, Cone of Cold can punish poor minion placement. If you have four minions on the board, but your three highest Attack-value minions are all next to each other, Cone of Cold can lock them all down. If you have more than three minions on the board, the Mage is forced to choose which three Cone of Cold hits—so you can keep them from hitting an optimal Freeze. There are a variety of potential board-placement decisions players should make. A few of the factors that affect these decisions are: Summons: Any spell cards or effects that “summon” a minion, rather than you playing it directly, will place the new minion on the far right-hand side of the board. Examples include the Shaman Hero Power or a spell like Animal Companion. Minion summons: Minions that summon an additional minion—whether with Battlecry effects, like Faceless Summoner, or at the end of your turn, like Primalfin Totem—summon the additional minion to the right of wherever the original minion was played. Some minions, such as Sindragosa or Grim Necromancer, summon multiple minions—in which case they will fill up adjacent spaces. Deathrattles: When a minion’s Deathrattle effect summons one or more minions, those minions will be summoned in the position of the original minion. If you have Cairne Bloodhoof on the board between two Murloc Tinyfins, Baine Bloodhoof will appear between the two adorable murlocs when Cairne dies. Spell effects: Plenty of spells other than Cone of Cold can take advantage of poor minion placement. Meteor is another great recent example. “Also damages” cards: If you’ve ever played Scourgelord Garrosh, you’ve seen this effect on Shadowmourne—and likely been able to identify efficient ways to clear your opponent’s minions while taking less damage with careful target choice. (This effect also exists on the Wild cards Magnataur Alpha and Foe Reaper 4000!) Adjacent effects: Like the Flametongue Totem example given earlier, some cards apply effects to minions adjacent to them. There are also minions whose Battlecry effects are applied to adjacent minions, like the popular Defender of Argus. Many players navigate the positional choices on their side of the game—optimizing for the most damage they can deal with a Flametongue Totem, or putting a Defender of Argus between two big minions on their own board—but the next-level challenge is thinking about potential outs your opponent could have that could punish your positioning. Can you set up your board so that it isn’t vulnerable to Cone of Cold? Could they clear it with Meteor? When taking your turn, are you minimizing the risk of them getting optimal value against you from their Flametongue Totem? There are additional positional possibilities coming soon in Kobolds & Catacombs, like the all-new Crushing Walls in Hunter! Knowing that option exists and positioning accordingly will be the mark of a strong player when the new expansion’s cards become available. Kobolds & Catacombs - Tale of the Fox Part 3

The Bard plucked at his lute, playing notes that conjured an eerie foreboding from its strings. Delighted that the tale teller’s break was at an end, the tavern’s denizens gave him their rapt attention as music filled the air. “Now, as I was saying, the misty depths of the chasm disguised how far down the river was. Quite a drop, no doubt, but not lethal. Marin was flung into that chilly tumult, tumbled and tossed, soaked to the bone. He caught a breath whenever the river would allow as it sped him through tunnel and chamber, ever downward—as all rivers run—deeper into the catacombs. The river spent its strength and grew sluggish and shallow enough for our hero to drag himself ashore. . . .” The tumultuous trip downriver had been quite a ride, so Marin allowed himself some time to cough up a few buckets of water and catch his breath. He assessed the damage (wounded pride, some bumps and bruises), then got his bearings. The river had deposited him on the edge of a cavern blooming with huge, glowing blue and purple mushrooms, and the air was thick with the rich, slightly acrid scent of them. He’d heard of such places—groves of glowing fungi with strange properties scattered throughout the catacombs—but he hadn’t had much occasion to explore them. The feared Fungal Lord Ixlid was rumored to frequent such places, which Marin felt was an excellent reason to avoid them. As he crept among the oversized fungi, one of the mushrooms uprooted itself and toddled in Marin’s direction. It was almost cute, but Marin hadn’t remained in one piece all these years by trusting appearances. He kept his distance and tried to shoo it away. “Surely you have better things to do? Vital mushroom business, perhaps? Over in that direction?” Marin said, hoping to dissuade the odd, squat creature’s approach. The mushroom creature looked up at him as he spoke, and tipped its head to the side quizzically. It paused for a heartbeat, then it let loose a deafening, skull-piercing, shriek. The sound hit Marin like a physical force, and he stumbled away from it, wincing and clutching his ears. Such a cacophony was sure to summon unwanted attention! Plugging his ears, Marin fled from the noise into a nearby tunnel, pursued by its shrill echoes. As he put more distance between himself and the creature, the noise finally faded. Eventually, whole minutes passed in blessed silence. Marin allowed himself to breathe, thinking that perhaps he’d gotten lucky, and that the abominable shrieking somehow hadn’t attracted any passersby after all. “Avast, ye tunnel lubber!” came a call from the tunnel behind him. He was wrong. Whenever Marin entered the catacombs, he expected to be surprised. Even so, the place still managed to catch him off guard from time to time. A kobold swaggered down the corridor toward him, waving a cutlass and dressed head to toe in the regalia of a ship’s captain. One of his hands had been replaced with the head of a mining pick. His captain’s hat bore a candelabra’s worth of lit candles, and more were woven into his whiskery beard, wicks burning. Marin crouched into a fighting stance as the outrageously dressed newcomer and a motley assortment of equally eccentric followers approached. The kobold gave Marin a once-over with a delighted expression on his ratty face and sheathed his cutlass. “Well snicker me whiskers! Ye be a fellow pirate!” Marin didn’t understand it. For some reason, strangers mistook him for a pirate all the time, despite the fact that he’d never set foot on a boat larger than a canoe in his entire life. Still, there could be an advantage in playing along. The kobold would surely know the area, and Marin might get an opportunity to “replace” some of the useful tools he’d lost to the river. “Yes. Uh. . . aye. I’m definitely a pirate. Starboard! Yo ho, poop deck, rum, and so forth!” The kobold narrowed his eyes and nodded, as if considering the wisdom of Marin’s words, then broke into a gap-toothed grin. “I be Captain Candlebeard. Welcome to the crew!” Candlebeard gestured expansively with his pick-hand to the ragtag assortment of outlandishly-dressed kobolds that filed up behind him. None of them looked the least bit like a pirate, but that didn’t seem to bother Candlebeard. “Back to the ship, ye scallywags! Mind the violet wurm burrows to the larboard side!” The crew of “pirates” marched their way from fungal forest through a procession of corridors, the natural stone tunnels they traveled eventually giving way to timber-supported mine shafts. Candlebeard happily spouted nautical nonsense at Marin all the while, and it was obvious that Candlebeard knew even less about real piracy than Marin did, which left Marin wondering how the kobold had adopted the pirate persona to begin with. The answer soon became clear. They emerged into a mined-out cavern—it was like a hub, with several smaller tunnels gaping in its walls. The space was dominated by the imposing bulk of a derelict pirate ship, resting at an angle against the cavern wall. Clusters of burning candles cast flickering light from its railings and masts, and the windows of the captain’s quarters glowed fitfully from within. Its ghostly tattered sails and a moth eaten black flag (painted with a candle and crossed bones, naturally) stirred in a steady draft. Marin couldn’t begin to guess how the ship had become interred here, deep underground and miles from the ocean. Candlebeard led them aboard and into the captain’s quarters. Very little of its former grandeur remained and there wasn’t much furniture: a captain’s table with a throne-like captain’s chair, and a weathered treasure chest. A map pinned to the wall caught Marin’s eye. There was a large dragon drawn on it, and Marin had seen a similar map before. He suspected that it charted a path to the lair of Vustrasz the Ancient, the most powerful and cantankerous dragon in the catacombs, famed for both his temper and his treasure hoard. Candlebeard thrust his cutlass at the image of the dragon in the center of the map. “Ye joined the crew just in time!” Candlebeard announced with a manic gleam in his eye. “We’re going to pillage a dragon treasure!” “. . . .And we need bait!” “Alas, poor Marin, always going from the cauldron straight into the flame.” The Bard lamented. “And when it comes to Vustrasz the Ancient, I mean flame quite literally. But don’t you worry, Marin is sharp one, and we’ll soon find out how he handles Captain Candlebeard!” The patrons cheered, thumping their tankards on tables and stomping the floorboards. The Bard peered into his tip cauldron and appeared a little crestfallen. “But not that soon. Time for a break!” Concluded in part 4!
